reader, anonymous, writes (7 December 2005): I'm not sure that it is up to your brother if you see his friend. He doesn't have any way to stop you, but perhaps if you and his friend agree that there'll be no awkwardness between you if it doesn't work, he might come around? It depends how old you are, for a start.
