 I know that men are under alot of pressure to go up to girls and start talking to them.
Ask her if she wants to go for a drink/coffee whichever is appropriate! Or maybe ask her if she has seen X movie and would she like to see it with you, then maybe go out to dinner afterwards. You clearly have something in common from the convention that you went to...(what was the convention on? I'm interested!)

Hey there
I know what you mean it can be difficult to take the first step. From a womans point of view don't be too pushy go for a coffee or maybe even just for a walk in a park on a nice day and then some lunch (I'm sure she will want to eat after walking) Use that time to catch up find out about each other.
The next time you go out will be so much easier because you would have found a neutral ground between you.
