It sounds as though he is a religious person.
What he says, to me implies that he might want to wait until getting married until the two of you make love (again?. Or this could be his in-direct way of saying "Do you love me enough to marry me?".
You should ask him to explain himself and tell him that you are not afraid of whatever he might tell you.
