How long have you been dating him? Can you give examples of how he's acted like an idiot? Disrespectful behavior is NEVER okay. Hopefully you call him out on it because if you say nothing than you're giving him the message that 'it's ok to mess with me.' If he doesn't get it, please don't waste your time trying to change him.

 He is probably aware (consciously or not) that women are addicted to emotional roller coasters. Hot and cold, push and pull, love and apathy, all confuse women - and hold their interest.
I'm willing to bet that when he changes like this, it makes you think about him constantly, want to be by his side, and try to change him. In other words, it makes you more devoted and attracted to him. Is that correct?
If so, that's why he does it. I'm not saying it leads to a healthy relationship - just one where the girl is nearly addicted to the guy.
