A reader, anonymous, writes (6 August 2006):

I would suggest the classic way of having a friend ask her for you. That way you don't have to face rejection head-on. If you're really scared of her knowing that you like her, you could have your friend say something like, "I noticed that you get really flirty around *so-and-so*. Do you have a thing for him?" That way she'll just think that it's her behavior that has provoked the question and not your feelings.

I don't think you really need to be afraid of rejection, though. Think of it this way, you already aren't dating this girl, so if you ask her out and she says no, you're back to where you started. You haven't lost anything. You have to be brave and remember that you have nothing to lose. This girl might not want to tell your friend that she likes you, she might want to tell you, and only you. That's why you can't be afraid to make the first move. You never know what could happen. What have you got to lose, right?

I hope this has helped you. I wish you the best of luck and I hope that everything turns out okay. Be brave!
