A reader, anonymous, writes (28 June 2005):

Are you depressed? Or this could be just a temporary sadness, loneliness, or blues that everyone feels from time to time. In contrast to normal sadness, severe depression, also called major depression, can dramatically impair a person's ability to function in social situations and at work. People with major depression often have feelings of despair, hopelessness, and worthlessness. So many people suffer and never do anything because of society's stigma on depression. Don't ever be ashamed to admit this may be your problem. Remember, millions of people suffer from this. Try to be strong and get some support. People with depression often experience feelings of worthlessness, helplessness, guilt, and self-blame. They may interpret a minor failing on their part as a sign of incompetence or interpret minor criticism as condemnation. People with major depression may experience such extreme emotional pain that they consider or attempt suicide.

Some depressions seem to come out of the blue, even when things are going well. Others seem to have an obvious cause: a relationship conflict, financial difficulty, or some personal failure. Yet many people with these problems do not become deeply depressed. Most psychologists believe depression results from an interaction between stressful life events and a person's biological9Genetic) and psychological vulnerabilities. You could have had something that happened to you in your life up to now that could be triggering it. Depression is a condition millions of people suffer from. You are not alone. Consider going to a family doctor and ask for help. There are wonderful and helpful resources out there to help you through this. If you feel it's just the blues...please tell someone you trust what you are going through. You need love, support and encouragement to get you through this tough time. I wish you luck and take care. God bless and hang in there.

A reader, pops +, writes (27 June 2005):

Depression and self hate is more common than any other mental disorder. Get professional help if this goes on for more than a few minutes. Spend time each day listing all your good qualities, characteristics, and skills. List your bad habits. Work on getting rid of the bad ones, and increasing the good. Talk to people who know you. Show them your lists and ask them to add or subtract. People tend to see you very differently than you see yourself. You will find that you are your own worst critic. Give yourself a break.
