A reader, anonymous, writes (25 January 2005):

Hi,

Well it depends how long you spoke on the phone for really dosent it. I can remember being at a friends house and some one phoned her and she was on the phone for half an hour, i was getting a little aggitated to be honest, because i difinately thought that was very rude. If someon calls me when i have company, i simply tell the person who is calling that it is an inconveinient time and i would call her back.

That would be the polite way of doing it.

However, i do think that your husband maybe over reacted, sulking and getting in a tantrum on his sons birthday sounds a little childish. My guess is that he was perhaps a little uncomfortable for your friend who was waiting for you to finish on the phone and was a bit embarrassed by it.

At least you will know for next time.
