For me, it's a bit of shaving in every direction. Everyone will be different of course, and it takes time to learn how to do it properly on yourself. My advice to avoid these black dots and maybe some of the cuts is to go a bit gentler, and exfoliate a bit first. I use a razor with 4 blades, which I find dramatically reduces the chance of cutting yourself and gives you a much more even, and smooth shave. Or you could get waxed professionally.

When i've shaved, it's very difficult.....
If i shave down, i also get little hairs and black spots left.
But if i shave upwards and do it slightly too hard or wrong, i get red dots, and sometimes blood.
The only thing i can say is.. TAKE YOUR TIME. Dont press down hard.. VERY VERY LIGHTLY, even if that means going over the same bit 20 times. Its the only way I know how to get it perfectly smooth, without any defects.
good luck.
PS you could always try waxing or something, but ouch?
