Wiki Articles - feedback please!

DearCupidDearCupid, posted over a year ago

Hi

I am looking into setting up an area of the site where we can have group-edited articles (wiki's). It will probably work like this...

I will create the articles and people can PM me when they have ideas for new ones (e.g. "losing your virginity" / "how to deal with a breakup").

The wiki will then let anyone* edit the article.

In a year or so we might have 20+ really good, well written and helpful articles that we can refer people to.

Does it sound like a good idea?

Does any programmer type person know of good wiki software for ASP.NET that I can use?

Andrew

* I'll probably restrict editing to people who have been on the site for over a week, to discourage idiots.

I found this overview of the wiki softwares:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_wiki_software

Most of them seem to be perl- or php-based, but there were two that were programmed in asp.net and C#: FlexWiki and Perspective, of which perspective looked like the better option to me because it seemed to give you more control, but of course I've never tried installing one of these items before.

I'm confused. What do you mean? Do you mean questions that get asked often or questions that fall under a certain category...we make a general article about that? "Getting over a break up? Here's how:" One like that? An article that has everyones input? And then we put it all together like on big essay or magazine column type thing?????

Are you doing this to cut down on questions that get asked over and over again or is it just a new idea? Sounds like a good idea even if I don't quite fully understand it yet. lol

Hi Vina

It wouldn't cut down on new questions but it would be some good advice for people looking... lots of questions have been answered many times and if as a group we can write good articles about it, it may be a help.

If I can sort out the software!!!

(like WikiPedia)

Really good idea!

I would restrict authorship to aunts (perhaps even an 'approved' list).

There's quite a lot of open source wiki software out there, although most of it is more php / mysql flavoured than asp.net

Check out:

- Mediawiki (free)

- Incentive

- Microsoft Sharepoint 2007 (has blogs + wikis)

- Confluence

- Socialtext

I agree with everyone that this is a really good idea!

I also agree with Yos in that only people on an "approved" list should have access to make updates/changes/etc. Perhaps users who are marked with hearts as user favorites?

MediaWiki is probably the best Wiki software.

It's PHP-based, but it's better than other wiki software.

It supports image upload (as long as you run ImageMagick) and is generally very good for this kind of thing.

Hope I've helped!

Hi Wendy

S...l...o...w...l...y

I've setup the facility for people to submit their own articles instead, really as an experiment. Click on "articles" to read more.

But I've yet to fully integrate this into the site fully... hopefully this week
