reader, anonymous, writes (25 March 2010): Well, I wouldn't recommend breaking it on purpose. There is no need to do that. With that said, there is a chance that you have broken it already. Things like using a tampon, or horse back riding can break it as well. Also, for a lot of men, the joy of being with a virgin is breaking the hymen.

Not all girls bleed after the first time of intercourse. Sometimes your hymen can break naturally without you even noticing! My first time I didnt bleed at all =)

Personally I've never heard of a guy getting freaked out, leaving mid coitus and running away screaming just because of a few spots of blood. He'll just be stoked that he's with a virgin. But that's just my opinion.
You wont have any problems if you break the hymen by yourself. Its a shame that you don't want to go naturally, but I can understand that if you do this you may be more relaxed and enjoy your first time more. The first time should be special and I suppose its one less thing to worry about.
