I recently started the pill. My period started on Tuesday 7/11 I got the pill on Friday 7/14 and started taking it while I was still on my period. Now I am reading things that say I have to take it either on the DAY my period started OR the Sunday AFTER regardless of whether or not my period was over.. My question is, since I started on Friday and not sunday and I still proctected???

I agree with the aunts below, as long as you started it on one day of your period you should be safe. But it is still advisable to use a second method of protection. Even though the pill is lik 99% effective there is still that 1% chance that it won't be. Not only that but a condom can prevent you from getting a STD. Unless you know your man is 100% safe... If he is then just use a condom for the next little while, give the pill time to take effect, and things should be all good! :)

Thank you for your quick responses!! I had planned on still using condoms for the first 1-2 months as a backup but just wanted to make sure that even though I hadn't done exactly as the pamphlet had advised that it wouldn't really matter that I had started it on a friday and not sunday..

willywombat agony auntChances are yes, but this is not the information you get on the pill packet. New research has shown that this is not as serious as once thought......BUT if pregnancy would be a disaster I would strongly suggest using a barrier method for the next three weeks.

rhc88 agony auntHi,

I asked a similar question to my doctor a few years back.

Yes you are protected; it doesn't matter what day you started on as long as you were on your period but it is still advisable to also use other forms of protection e.g. condoms, during the first few months.

Remember to take it each day for three weeks and have a one-week break each month.
