How does the ratings thingumy work?

ItalieItalie, posted over a year ago

I've just had a look at my rating on the 'your column' page and MY POOR LINE IS GOING UP!!!?? Is there any way of finding out what reply someone thought was poor?

Hi

Basically.. No.

The main thing to keep an eye on is the rating on the "Top Agony Aunts" page - if you appear on there you're doing pretty well (it requires a certain number of ratings, and the more answers you give the more ratings you get).

Hiya,

Just an off the cuff idea do you think it would be possible to facilitate specific feeback on answers to those with an account? It might help. Sometimes you are giving advice people dont wanna hear and the poor line is the rough with the smooth but I think we would all like to know if we are going wrong.

Hi Dazzer

That's an interesting point and it is something I am thinking of. However, I think there is a benefit in the ratings being anonymous for the question poser, too. Plus, there are dangers in adding too much complexity into the DearCupid interface with new features like this.

To be honest I would concentrate more on the "good" ratings than the poor... over time if you're giving great advice this will far outweigh any bad ratings.

Good point, Andrew, about the comment on focusing on the 'good' ratings rather the 'poor'. A positive approach is better because, not every questioner will like an answer, no matter how "sensible and right" it is.

It all comes down to how they (the questioner) interprets the meaning of the given answer and how it applies to their personal circumstance.
