I guess thats what he means. But dont worry, my family is from Northern Ireland and they are protestant, but loads of my friends are Catholic. I dont think religion is that important anymore, except in very strict families! x

I am an Irish 'Catholic'- and my boyfriend would probably describe himself as a 'British Protestant'- Despite living literally a few miles apart. That's Northern Ireland for you!!...
neither of us practice religion!!

If someone describes themselves as a catholic, it probably means they are a catholic.
The fact they mention religion at all means they are either religious, or have been affected by the troubles and therefore would never consider a protestant girl.
If he's in America though it could mean anything as you lot are obsessed with heritage and describe themselves as Polish or Irish even though they've never even been there.
Why not just ask him?
Good Luck!! xx

Yes this means he is of Irish origin and was born a Catholic. It does not necessarily mean he is still a practising Catholic though (ie going to Church on Sundays and sticking to the commandments). - You would have to ask him to know for sure.
