writes: my boyfriend and i just broke up because i'm going abroad but he's staying behind for one more year of school. He's what you call my typical 'first love'. Now that we aren't with one another, and i'll tell him 'i miss you' over the phone or online but he replies - 'i'm sorry but i don't know what it means to miss a person...but i do love you if that means anything.' I know he doesn't mean to be 'mean' but his repetitive comment is so confusing! What do you think is his intention by saying that and does it seem believable? Is he trying to distance himself or am I being the sensitive one?

reader, anonymous, writes (31 August 2007): odd. if he loves you then i don't see why he doesn't miss you but then you are sending mixed messages, breaking up and then phoning him telling him you miss him
