How do I help my girlfriend? She seems to be very depressed but won't seek help

A male United Kingdom age 26-29, anonymous writes:

I'm worried about my girlfriend, I think she might be depressed but she refuses to talk to anyone other than me about it and even then I have to really try in order to get her to tell me how she's feeling.

She keeps talking about how she doesn't have any passion for anything but me and the month long travelling trip we'll be going on this summer and once thats over she's not got anything to look forward to and although she hasn't directly said it I'm worried shes so invested in this trip that she might not see much else to live for afterwards either.

She wants to drop out of uni and all the socities she does and I don't know what to do, she refuses to get any help because she wanted to join the military and doesn't want it to show up on her medical which I suppose shows she doesn't want to kill herself but I'm still extremely worried but I don't want to lose her by pressuring her into something she doesn't want to do

aunt honesty agony auntShe needs to help herself. If she wants to drop from uni to join the military then try get her excited about it. All you can do is be their for her and be the best boyfriend that you can be. Unfortunately you cannot make her seek help.

A male reader, Denizen United Kingdom +, writes (28 March 2017):

Denizen agony auntThis is unfair on you. You aren't a health professional, I presume, and that is what she needs. Until such time as she gets help you need to seek help on her behalf. Someone involved in pastoral care at college or a GP would be a start.

If she recognises she has a problem then she should seek help. It isn't unreasonable. You cannot think yourself or read yourself out of depression no matter how smart you are.
