Hi I am worried becouse I have been viewing porn on the internet on the free porn sites such as porntube and the like. I have used standerd search terms but sometimes have seen images/links to videos that appeared dodgy. The greatest consern to me is that some of the thumb nails show people who appear underage, on occasion I find these worrying imagies have appeared from no where when I close the window I was viewing. As I do not click on these links I have not been able to confirm that they are indeed dodgy but I feel very worried by them all the same. Is this a common experience when viewing porn on line or is their something I am doing wrong? Whilst I have no desire to view underage porn, does accidentaly coming across suspect material meen that I have done something illegal? Hope someone can help me get some perspective with regard to these issues?

Tisha-1 agony auntI'm not tech savvy enough to give you an expert opinion. Therefore, I will post a link for you so that you can find an answer to this question:

http://www.asacp.org/index.php "Founded in 1996, the Association of Sites Advocating Child Protection (ASACP) is a non-profit organization dedicated to eliminating child pornography from the Internet. ASACP battles child pornography through its CP reporting hotline, and by organizing the efforts of the online adult industry to combat the heinous crime of child sexual abuse. ASACP also works to help parents prevent children from viewing age-inappropriate material online."

My guess is that the owner of the free site has to make money somehow. And that somehow is through selling ads on the pages. I would doubt that the owner goes through and carefully checks each and every ad that is put up on the site. Just be careful and sensible. Good antivirus protection is key, I would imagine!

Lola1 agony auntI agree with quiet-echo that most of the porn models that look young are hired for that reason. They ARE usually 18 years old.

I might have had the same concern myself, depending on what you’ve seen. While it certainly makes sense to avoid sites which repeatedly make you feel uncomfortable, or have pop-ups that make you feel uncomfortable, I don’t think you need to stop viewing adult and legal porn altogether.

Without knowing what you are specifically seeing or "googling", it is hard to judge for sure (and please do not post anything here, I won't be looking into it! lol), but I think you are probably safe. If you have not clicked on any questionable link or googled or downloaded anything inappropriate, you are likely safe from legal ramifications.

If you are still worried, then quiet-echo's advice is quite valid. If you are concerned about the possible under-aged child pornography victims, you may wish to contact the police as well, notifying them of a potential danger.

Police (at least where I come from) are usually very helpful and willing to help. They have an interest in preventing crime as well as hunting down those who are already guilty.

me & my hb had the same thing, we viewed some free porn & one of the vids seemed to show a "bearly legal girl" we switched it off straight away, it made me feel sick even if this girl had been of age, it was so gross, we later spoke to a friend of ours who said that these popular free access web sites r heavly vetted & have to follow strict codes of conduct, but he did say that it's very eady to click on thumbnails & u could be only a few clicks sway from those evil sites!! I won't go back on them now, instead we have paided for sky tv & all the porn channels, it's much safer!!!

harshbutfair agony auntQuiet: Your answer implies that somewhere there is a big room of complicated computers staffed by experts where a flashing light and alarm will sound each time someone on a porn site views a potentially suspect image.

This is nonsense. The police are overworked, underfunded and only just about manage to scrape through prosecuting the real bad guys. Most paedophiles are snared by taking their computers to be fixed at computer stores or reported by kids they try to groom online.

The thought that this user is going to be traced or prosecuted for trying to get his fix to spank his monkey is pure hysteria. Something like 40% of internet traffic is porn. The big free porn sites are in the top 100 most visited on the web. They get millions of users a day. If they were serving up illegal images (other than copyright violations!) then they'd have been closed long ago and we'd all have heard about it.

My advice to the OP remails. Don't go to these sites if you are worried. Get out and get some fresh air instead.

quiet-echo agony auntI may be buying into hysteria on this one, but given society's view and understandably harsh treatment of paedophiles, I would not rely too heavily on a porn site administrator (nor anyone else) to protect me from mistaken prosecution, on the remote offchance that anything is traced back to me. Reagardless of how repuatble or careful they might be.

If the cost of my freedom and reputation is wasting a few minutes of everyone's time, I'll pay it, happily.

harshbutfair agony auntQuiet's answer is nonsense. If you're worried about visiting these porn sites don't visit them again. The big free porn sites will be VERY careful to ensure that nothing is illegal on them. But why take that chance if it's preying on your mind? If you present yourself to the police all it's going to do is take up their time and yours. Move on. 1000s of guys have this concern. Porn paranoia.

A female reader, quiet-echo Canada + , writes (4 November 2009):

quiet-echo agony auntValid concern. I suggest you contact your local police station and ask them how this should be handled. For your own protection keep note of the date and time of the conversation and a summary of what was said, along with the name and (if possible) the badge number of the officer you've spoken to.

As you know many children are exploited for the sexual gratification of others. But many of these 'models' and 'actors' are of legal age and specificaly hired because of their youthful appearance.

Just the same...contact your local police station.
