A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Hey there. I'm currently on the microgynon contraceptive pill and I'm having a few queries and was wondering if anyone could help?

Ive been taking them for about 8 months now. I was told at the doctor to take them everyday for 3 weeks and then stop for a week - which will be when i bleed. Well its started in the last 3/4 months being really irregular. I end up taking about 9/10 tablets and i come on. Its and then when i stop for a week nothing happens. I want to sort this out because my sex life has completely gone down the drain because i'm worried about coming on, and i cant have sex in the week that i stop taking my pill because i could get pregnant. Plus - my partner really hates condoms, he finds them uncomfortable.

PLEASE HELP :D xxx

chigirl agony auntMany others mentioned different types of birth control other than the pill. Talk to your doctor about that instead of trying to get a different type of pill. If you get the implant you wont have to worry about being protected for years. If you take the injections you go 3 months in a row without having to worry about it. Both of these sound like the better option for you.

chigirl agony auntYou will NOT get pregnant in the week you do not take the pills, if you have taken all the pills for the previous 3 weeks. Read the leaflet, it is all described there in detail. It is also described in the leaflet what you need to do if you miss a pill, depending on what week it was in.

You do NOT need to use condoms while you take ALL of your pills and then take a week off the pill. You're not unprotected, your body is having it's monthly cycle and the pills are still protecting you (even when you're not eating them on the weak off) provided you have taken pills for the entire 3 weeks prior.

If you experience irregular menstruation talk to your doctor about this. Perhaps a different type of birth control pill will be better for you.

Read the leaflet!

KeighleySky agony auntare you sure your taking it right?

you take it for 21 days and then have a week and a day break.

im on the same pill as you and i can tell you what day and time ill come on to my period.

i take my pill at 11pm every night for 21 days and i finish on a friday and then start my pill again the next saturday, it takes a total of five days for me to come on to my period.

and with the whole boyfriend comment, its his package he should also use contraception, unless he wants the chance of being a daddy. i know a lot of people who got pregnant on just the pill.

go back to you rgp and ask about it and maybe try changing your pill.

Maybe that specific type of pill isn't for you. I would go back to your GP and have a chat with them. There are so many different pills so maybe another type would be more suitable for you.

A female reader, person12345 United States +, writes (6 May 2011):

person12345 agony auntYou need to continue taking them even if you start bleeding. Breakthrough bleeding can happen throughout your cycle, but it does not impact the pill's effectiveness. If you want to be protected you MUST continue to take your ENTIRE pack of pills. If you stop in the middle of a pack, you can start ovulating at any time, meaning you aren't protected again until you've taken the pill again for a full seven days. You should not stop taking the pill because you start bleeding.

If you've taken your pill correctly for the entire three weeks, even during the week you're scheduled to bleed you are still protected even though you're not taking a pill unless it says otherwise in the packet. Why on Earth did you stop taking the pill mid-pack? Also, it doesn't matter if your partner doesn't like condoms, he's not the one who has to be pregnant. Use a condom until you can get back on schedule with your pills. If he doesn't want to use a condom, he doesn't get to have sex.

pjr7719 agony auntHave you thought about the contraceptive injection?

Or implant?

I use it, I cannot take the combined pill because of migraines. I have only had slight breakthrough bleeding three times in a year, and I don't have to remember to take anything every day. It's very easy. Of course, what suits one won't suit another and you should talk things over with your doctor.

Good luck!

A female reader, celtic_tiger United Kingdom +, writes (6 May 2011):

celtic_tiger agony auntSounds like breakthrough bleeding - this is a common side effect with the contraceptive pill. (if you read the info sheet in the pack it should explain about this).

The pill generally can have a whole range of side effects!

BUT, I would say go and see your Doctor/Nurse to check it out. It could be that this particular brand of pill isnt right for you and you need to be swapped to another one. Most women take a couple of brands before they finds one that suits them.

The first one I tried almost made me suicidal with hormones and mood swings! Not good. Always best to check and if they try and fob you off, stand your ground!
