A female reader, SallyN United Kingdom +, writes (7 June 2012):

SallyN agony auntSemen Therapy makes pregnancy safer

"Oral sex (with semen swallowing) makes pregnancies safer." It's true, research by Professor Gus Dekker, a maternal-fetal medicine specialist at the University of Adelaide, shows. Dekker compared 41 pregnant women with pre-eclampsia - a condition where the mother's blood pressure soars during pregnancy - to 44 without.

He found 82 per cent of those without the condition practiced fellatio compared with 44 per cent of those with it. The explanation? Semen contains a growth factor which helps persuade a mother's immune system to accept sperm. Regular exposure before pregnancy helps her immune system get used to her partner's sperm.

Wikipedia: Pre-eclampsia, Treatment and prevention, Fellatio (with semen swallowing)

It has been suggested that fellatio may, through "immune modulation", BBC News [35] have a beneficial role in preventing dangerous complications during pregnancy, reducing specifically the risk of miscarriage and pre-eclampsia. Specifically, several research groups (Koelman, CA; et al. (2000). "Correlation between oral sex and a low incidence of preeclampsia: A role for soluble HLA in seminal fluid?". Journal of Reproductive Immunology 46 (2): 155–166. DOI:10.1016/S0165-0378(99)00062-5. PMID 10706945.)[36]

have reported that pre-eclampsia, a life threatening complication that sometimes arises in pregnancy, is much less frequent in couples who have practiced oral sex, and even more rare in couples where fellatio regularly ended with a woman's swallowing of her partner's semen.

The results were statistically significant and are consistent with the fact that semen contains several agents that have important roles in the prevention of pre-eclampsia, which may arise out of an immunological condition.[35][37][38]

According to that view, preeclampsia is caused by a failure of the mother to accept the fetus and placenta, which both contain "foreign" proteins from the father's genes.

Regular exposure to the father's semen helps cause immunological tolerance to their proteins. Other studies also found that, while any exposure to the partner's sperm during sex appears to decrease the chances of various disorders, women in couples who have practiced "sex acts other than intercourse" are less than half as likely to suffer preeclampsia.

A male reader, HenryRex United States +, writes (22 March 2012):

When my ex-wife and I were trying to concieve, the doctor told us that swallowing sperm forces your body to accept it, making it easier for it to accept it, when it is introduced vaginally. My wife, who had been trying to get pregnant for over 15 years, got pregnant within three months of swallowing sperm. Her body, however, rejected the child, and it died at three months gestation.

dmartin89 agony auntI'm finding it funny how most of you are saying how nonsense/silly/stupid this question is, when you haven't even made an effort to read it properly..

He clearly states "Now don't think I'm asking will it get me pregnant I'm asking will it help?"

I hope you have made more of an effort when answering other questions.

A female reader, dmartin89 United Kingdom +, writes (10 November 2010):

dmartin89 agony auntThere are some extremely arrogant answers on here!

As a pregnancy and birth professional I can confidently say that YES, swallowing her partners sperm CAN help a woman get pregnant.

Now, I'm not saying that you can conceive by swallowing sperm but it does have benefits;

By exposing yourself to the antigens and unique proteins in your partners sperm will both reduce the risk of pre-eclampsia and increase the likelihood of a successful pregnancy.

It can also help to conceive.

When sperm is ejaculated, the pathway to the fallopian tubes is an assault course to kill off the weaker sperm. Including your bodies defensive organisms that deliberately try to engulf and kill outside antigens (sperm). When the body gets used to this alien protein being in the body by digesting it (swallowing), less sperm will be destroyed on their journey to the fallopian tubes because the defensive organisms wont see the sperm as a target to be destroyed. Thus there will be a higher chance of being pregnant!!

A female reader, Tisha-1 United States +, writes (10 November 2010):

Tisha-1 agony auntThis question is probably better directed at someone with expertise in reproductive medicine. I read the article on pre-eclampsia in Wikipedia. I also then read the abstract of the articles.

Here's an extract from that article's abstract: "The present study shows that oral sex and swallowing sperm is correlated with a diminished occurrence of preeclampsia which fits in the existing idea that a paternal factor is involved in the occurrence of preeclampsia. Because pregnancy has many similarities with transplantation, we hypothesize that induction of allogeneic tolerance to the paternal HLA molecules of the fetus may be crucial. Recent data suggest that exposure, and especially oral exposure to soluble HLA (sHLA) or HLA derived peptides can lead to transplantation tolerance."

The abstract then concludes with this: "Preliminary data show lower levels of sHLA in seminal plasma in the preeclampsia group, although not significantly different from the control group. An extension of the present study is necessary to verify this hypothesis."

So it's not clear to me that this is scientifically verified proof that swallowing semen helps a woman get pregnant. We've got some 'A' here, but I'm not sure that we've got clinical, scientific, irrefutable proof that if A, then B, then C. If that makes any more sense than those arcane sentences from the abstracts.

What it all does show is that human biology is far more complex and intricate than we realize on a daily basis. Perhaps if you think it will help you get pregnant, maybe it will. The placebo effect has been shown to be a powerful thing, after all.

Btw, here's the journal citation: http://www.jrijournal.org/article/S0165-0378(99)00062-5/abstract

Honeypie agony auntHow would it help you? You can not fertilize any eggs by swallowing sperm. Your eggs are in your ovaries which, in case you don't know, are situated in your uterus. No where near your stomach.

I hope you stop listening for advice from whomever gave you that ignorant advice.

And please, don't try and get pregnant til you know a little more about basic human anatomy and biology.

A female reader, Nime United States +, writes (10 November 2010):

Nime agony auntAlso, the people here are grossly simplifying the digestion process. One also swallows birth control pills but they affect your ability to become pregnant, right? Bottom line, swallowing sperm will not increase fertility, but has been shown to reduce the risk of pre-eclampsia and improve the success of the pregnancy, should it occur, by exposing you to your partner's immune system.

Yes, it will help you to stay pregnanty once you are pregnant.

Look at the Wikipedia posting on Eclamsia. This describes in detail how swallowing sperm before conception can help to make sure that the female's body does not fight against the developing baby causing a miscarriage.

DrPsych agony auntI am a bit worried that you are trying to get pregnant but lack the basic biological knowledge. There is no way that it would help you to make a baby. I can only assume the source of this advice is the potential father with a vested interest! I suggest that you pick up the dummies guide to pregnancy from your local store. It really helps to explain the whole process and it helped me a lot in the early stages of pregnancy with lifestyle tips.

A female reader, k_c100 United Kingdom +, writes (10 November 2010):

k_c100 agony auntNo. Think about it for a minute here and you will realise how silly this is - when you swallow ANYTHING (sperm, food...whatever) it goes down the oesophagus/gullet/food pipe (whatever you want to call it!) and this leads to the stomach. Your stomach then digests the food (or whatever swallowed substance it is) and then this passes into the intestines, then eventually out the other end.

There is no link between your digestive system and your reproductive system, your stomach doesnt have a special tube linked to your womb that channels sperm down there! As soon as the sperm enter your mouth they are pretty much dead - saliva is the initial substance to start breaking it down, followed by the acid in your stomach.

I have no idea who told you such nonsense but dont listen to any more of their advice in the future!
