You need to get a proper medical opinion if you are worried about anything to do with your body. I'm not an expert on periods but, the last time I went along to a sexual health clinic with my ex-girlfriend one of the (female) doctors told us it is "normal" for girls to go without periods sometimes and in fact it is only in the last generation that women have them so regularly every month.

Also - the oestrogen pill is likely to stop or reduce periods, not bring them on. If you are confused / have questions then visit your GP or contact Brook or try NHS direct.

If the weight loss is a beauty thing, then pack it in and eat!! If you carry on you will become unfertile, that is for certain. Our bodies cannot take pounding from these silly diets, they need a constant, well balanced diet to stay healthy. And it is not only the child bearing side of things but the long term health issues that can arise as we get older. If you are naturally thin and light weighted then there is nothing much you can do. The best thing is probably to go along to your doctors and get them to check you over. Professional advice on this issue if the best. We aunts can only guide you the best that we know ourselves.

Take care

A female reader, CarrieMagdelene United States +, writes (23 February 2007):

CarrieMagdelene agony auntIt is very likely you will be able to have children when you want them if you put on that needed weight and start your period again. You may not be fertile for a while, but you will probably be able to have children, unless you have been very underweight for a very long time, like over a year or two. Then your fertility might be a little compromised...But check with your doc when you go to get the pills. Best of luck!

A male reader, I've been there United States +, writes (23 February 2007):

This is one of the many common problems that young girls like youself face, i am not very experienced at this sort of thing but i will tell you what i know. If you 17 and 7 and a half stone your underweight (you knew that) but for many underweight girls the inoccurance of your period is common. I can tell you now that if you dont have your period then you cant have children. This is because your not relising an egg monthly ( thankyou biology ). The best advice that i can giv you is that if you want to have children then i strongly reccomend putting on weight.
