A female reader, bronniedavis  United Kingdom +, writes (11 August 2011):

bronniedavis agony auntI also have an iud, and for about the first 5 months my periods became longer and more frequent and it became very painful so I decided to go an see my Gp just to male sure everything was okay! He said that it was normal for this to happen in this time period however when you have an iud for a while and you are getting the irregular bleeds and pain it can be a sign of infection as when you have a iud you are alot higher in chances of getting one because you've already got that foreign object in your body! I've had my our for almost a year and a half now and don't even remember its there my periods are shorter and not I don't cramp nearly as much !!

I think you should deffo pop in and see your local GP, if it is an infection you'll be prescribed antibiotics, if its not, then they'll at least be able to tell you if everything is okay :) x

Hope I've helped !
