Why did he change in just 2 weeks? And why is he choosing the slutty girls over me?

Ok, I'm 17 and i really liked this guy who used to be one of my best friends. All the signs were that he liked me back (well, not so much signs, he told me) but I went on holiday for a week and when I came back everything had changed! He told me he just wanted to be friends, and wouldn't tell me why. And now, I see him at school with a different girl everyday, and theres rumours of him doing all sorts of things that I wouldn't have believed were in his character. The thing that shocked me most was that he went to third base with one of the slutty girls our year. One of the things I used to like most about him was how sweet and considerate he was, why has he changed? And why would he choose those sort of girls over me, his friend, who he used to be really into?
