Why am I so shy in front of his family?

A female United Kingdom age 36-40, anonymous writes:

I have been with my man for a year, I'm 18 years old and he is 24. We love each other more than anything in this world and get on great, we spend all our time together and hardly ever argue. Thing is I have met his mum loads of times now since we been together, she is really nice to me, but I get really shy in front of her and the rest of the family, I never know what to say to them so I go quiet, I'm not shy in front of my boyfriend, so why am I shy in front of his family?

I don't want his family to think I'm rude for not talking much, they are nice and I like them but I just find it hard to speak more, I do chat to them but I get all nervous. This is also the first time a boy has ever let me meet their family, could this be that I'm just new to all this?.

He is not shy in front of my family at all, he is like one of my family now, he just makes himself at home most the time...

I just want some advice on how to stop being so nervous when we go to his house??

kellyxxx agony auntI was the same with my boyfriends family... It just takes time really. After 3 years I'm like part of his family now, however I still get a bit nervous/shy around them occasionally... You just have to take steps to get over this, for example, when you're next with his family try and give a compliment out! Genuinely mean whatever you say though, or else it will come across very false. By doing this, His family will think very positively of you so this will help your self esteem regarding what they think of you. I'm sure that they don't think you're ignorant, everyone understands that it takes time to adjust to new people, and some people take a lot longer than others.x
