I experienced the same thing. But I didn't visit a psychologist because I thought it wasn't that of a big deal. A few years later I was diagnosed with 2mental illnesses. So I think you should visit a psychologist asap , or else its too late.

As a mental health nurse my penny's worth would be to sit down with your local doctor .. someone you know and discuss your situation with them .. There is no one shoe fits all and you may benefit from a holistic over view of a few professionals under the care of your local doctor ..

Moving on and letting go of the past is hard .. I know as when young I was assaulted by a drunken man who came with my uncle to wish my family a happy new years ..

I worked through on my own that I didn't want to be a victim .. why should I let someone ruin my life .. surviving now it's hard but it's rewarding .. so there is hope even if you don't think or feel it the now

We are always here with a friendly ear anytime you need .

Take care sweetie .. chin up

A female reader, CindyCares Italy +, writes (10 September 2015):

CindyCares agony aunt I'd try a psychologist. Not that counselours cannot be a precious help, they are, but they are better for teaching you strategies and coping skills to deal with a specific situation , a specific difficulty in communication or relationships or family life etc. Like, a person does not need to have any mental health issue and still, say, have trouble in being assertive and communicate effectively, or still finding hard to stick to a task and avoid constant procrastination etc.

If you are stuck into your past in a way that affecrs seriously your daily life ( social life, work performance, physical wellbeing .. ) maybe it's better to get evaluated by a psychologist, who could confirm , or exclude, a post -traumatic stress syndrome , an OCD disorder, or any other pathological condition as the factor keeping you stuck.

If you should need medications, - personally I never heard of any psychologists, neither where I live now nor in the USA, having prescribing authority ( it was totally against the law ). Then again, I don't know , I guess different States may have different regulations, you can ask that to your regular GP.

If you should need a prescription for medications ,though, your psychologist can always refer you to a psychiatrist for prescriptions only ,and continue his/her regular therapy with you.

As for psychiatrists being prescribers only, I don't know... I think that would be a bad psychiatrist ,- or else , one belonging to my National Health Service :).

As a matter of fact, nothing would prevent you from starting, so to speak, from the top , seeing a psychiatrist first ,who can assist you both with meds and talk therapy. I guess it's just a matter of not shooting at flies with a cannon- if your disturbance can be solved or at least helped, with a cycle of short term therapy, a psychologist would be perfect .

Whatever treatment you choose, congratulations for having made the choice to take your life back into your hands ,and best wishes.

Ivyblue agony auntI would start with your GP and ask for a referral. By asking you are not obliged to discuss any aspects other than the basics. Not to sure what the procedure is in your country however you could find a psychologist and phone them direct for an appointment. My understanding is that psychiatrist are more about medication whereas psychologist are more focused of counselling and behaviour strategies. There is always community organisations that hold get togethers for additional support however that would be less confidential. All the best to finding peace and happiness

A female reader, fishdish United States +, writes (10 September 2015):

fishdish agony auntI've gone to counselors for the most part--some were school counselors, but I also one with MSW and one was an ARNP, nurse practitioner, with prescribing authority. So I guess supertechnically I've never seen a psychologist. My counselors have given me coping tools you need. My feeling is psychologists are more specialized, and do try to get more to the roots of the issue, instead of kind of just figuring out healthier ways of reacting. Because your stuff is so deepseated, this may be more appropriate for you. Some psychologists may have prescribing authority also if that's something you need to consider, for anxiety/ptsd or depression, although psychologists sometimes refer you to psychiatrists if the psychologist doesn't have prescribing authority. Psychiatrists are almost exclusively prescribers. These may be big generalizations, or person-specific experiences, or my own misunderstanding lol, so someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but that's always been my sense of the distinctions.
