Where are the best places to meet new people?

Hi this isnt a relationship question but i was wondering where the best places to meet new people are. I missed the deadline for college so i wont be able to get in until next year and i a currently unemployed fir health reasons. I dont really go on nights out would this be a good way to meet new friends? any other ideas? thank you in advance
