A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Ok well I was 2 weeks late [well if it was 34 day cycle like my last period] but I had brown spotting yesterday and this morning so I put a pad on to see if my period came. I'm 17 and I thought I might of been pregnant because of my missed period but I wanted to wait another week or so to test because we where using condoms but forgot a couple of times.

Well it did come [my period], it was very dark brown/black and I just went to have a shower and it was very red and pink. Whilst in the shower I noticed on my leg [yes disgusting!] was like a piece of skin which was dark red at the bottom [with blood] and it was quite a large piece of skin and it had little bumps on it, to be honest it looked like a piece of meat you get on chicken on the end bits. I've had really bad period pains all days and do any of you have any idea of what it is because I'm really scared because it isn't small it's quite big and I'm worrying incase something is wrong with me.

I'm sorry if my explination seems stupid but I'm actually really scared because I haven't a clue what it is. Please help and thank you for any replies.

Hi there. Well I think that's normal because that happens to me too. That thing is called Menstrual Blood Clots. I just figured out what its called today, but I've had it many times.

So, blood clots are the clumps that occur when the blood hardens from a liquid to a solid. blood clots are nothing to be worried about.. blood clots that are passed during menstruation can be completely normal. In most cases, this is simply your body passing blood too quickly. And no, Blood clots have nothing to do with your menstrual crumps or dysmenorrhea.(Idk if that's the right spelling). haha :)) Okay, I hope I helped.

I am 21 years old & had surgery in February for a severe case of Endometriosis. I have always had bad periods & sometimes they were worse than others. I have had the skin come out as well on more than one occasion. I wouldn't say it's something that should scare you, but I would get checked just in case there are always a number of things it could be. It's better to be safe than sorry.

It's perfectly normal apperently it's this mucus like covering of your uterus and is shedding something like that. All I know is that if you ever are immobilized by cramps be prepared for a lot of those to come out hey I get these every period and I'm 14 and clean ( as in virgin) so its nothing serious

Hi I'm 30 and have had two children so I've seen plenty of "blood-clots" but like you guys I had a large piece of skin come out and have just started my period... Having never seen anything like it i immediately googled and stumbled upon this. Anyway, Instead of taking my microgynon on the 1st day of my period starting, I took it just before I was due on! - (out of impatience and knowing I'm not pregnant)...so my guess after reading your comments is it's probably got something to do with prolonging the time gap between periods while using contraception. Still, its always worth checking with a GP...

person12345 agony auntIt sounds to me like it could have been a miscarriage. You should get to your gynecologist to check things out and make sure you aren't at risk for infections.

I'm pretty sure this is normal.Cuz I'm 13 years old and it happens to me.It can't have anything to do with pregnancy.I think it just has something to do with periods.

This just happened to me right now!

I don't even have my period though.... I'm suppose to have it next week... I freaked out because i just went to pee and then I saw something hanging from my V. (sorry to be so gross)I wiped it off and was freaking out because I had no idea what it was! It alsmot looked like a sack of skin, with a little blood dots around it. I kind of squished it open and there were little brown dots inside.... No idea if that was my uterus lining or a miscarriage.

~i just had a biopsy this past friday (right now is sunday) and i'm unsure if this is a link to what they did down there for my HPV check. -a biopsy is where they take a small piece of flesh from your uterus, the size is smaller than a pea..... ---- but what came out was about an inch and a half long! i'm gonna try to make an appointment soon to see if it was uterus lining or a miscarriage...

I am 17 and i got the implanon in january, it caused me to bleed pretty much every day for the first month i had it, i had a holiday booked for april and so i wanted it to stop before then. my doctor gave me 2 months worth of the pill to take alongside my inplant and i finished it a week ago. This morning i experienced the worst cramps i have ever had. I kept doubling over when i was walking because they were so painful and when i got home this afternoon I went to the toilet and i got the same white/pink flesh thing, except there was 2 of them. it really scared me and within the past month i have thrown up 3 times which is really unusual for me as i'm hardly ever ill. I've been with my boyfriend for nearly 3 years now and we have never had unprotected sex so i don't understand how i could have been pregnant or anything, help!

This happened to me just now that's why i looked it up on google and this page showed up (im 17)....i think it's normal...i was a bit freaked out when i saw it...it never happened to me..like it was really thick and large and i was scared, but i dont think its something to be freaked out if anything it did relieve that agonizing pain i had in the morning ...seriously...i automatically made that connection because in the morning i had really bad cramp pain and then i showered and it fell off and it didnt hurt anymore. if it happens again ill porbably go to the doctor but im sure is nothing to worry about.

The same thing happened to me today and I was really freaked out as in my 11 years of periods (I'm 22 now) I have never seen anything like it. I'm on the pill to regulate my periods as they have always been very painful. I started spotting so I came off it and had a much heavier period than normal with agonizing cramps.

I noticed this piece of 'chicken skin' with blood clots in 2 days in. I'm a virgin so I know its not a miscarriage but I was still really worried and called my mum to show her - maybe a bit gross but I figure it's less embarrassing than showing the doctor! It's happened to her a few times before and said it was nothing to be worried about. However if it started to happen regularly then I should go and see a gynecologist.

Thank you to all those who have shared their wisdom, it really helps to know that you're not alone!

A female reader, MadFae United States +, writes (31 July 2008):

I just started Ortho Tricyclen Lo and I'm having my first period on this brand of pill. I'm 37, so I've had a few periods in my time. I know exactly what you're talking about because I just had it happen to me.

I started my pills in the middle of my cycle, so I was about two weeks "late" from when my period would have started before birth control. I got to my sugar pills, and after three days I started bleeding, lightly. Then earlier today I had intense cramps, and when I removed my tampon, there was this huge piece of "skin" on it! There wasn't even much blood at all. It was a funky fleshy gray color with some little bits of blood stuck to it. It didn't have much of an odor other than the normal blood smell.

I was totally grossed out, but I felt ok, so I let it go. Then later in the day I changed tampons again and there was another large chunk! Still not bleeding much though. Off the pill, I have fairly heavy 7 day periods with some pretty heavy dark red clotting and this is NOT the same thing at all. I know what my normal periods look like, as I'm sure you do.

I have a doctor's appointment next Monday and I'm going to ask about it. After reading the responses here, it seems to have something to do with starting or changing your birth control. Still, I've been on the pill before for years at a time and NEVER had anything like this happen. I can understand why you'd be freaked out. Good luck!

The same thing happened to me today and I am freaking out too. I had just started using the Evra birth control patch and I suppose I timed it badly (used my first patch 1 week before my next period so didn't have a period for 6 weeks in a row), it's my patch free week and my period has just started - then today I had very bad cramp and the "chicken skin" fell out! I sometimes have clotting during my period but this is nothing like it - I swear it's just like chicken skin with the bumps and all! When it fell off it curled just like a piece of chicken skin would! It also has the dark red at the bottom exactly like yours. I'm not sure if I should panic, I did collect it in a plastic bag but not sure what to do with it so now in the bin. I hope someone knows what this is all about??!!

I have the same thing. It happened to me about 3 years ago, and I went to the Doctor, he said it may have ben a miscarriage, he was not sure, as he did not have a sample of it to be tested. It happened again today, and I get really bad period pain associated with it. This time I have collected it (I know! disgusting! And yes it is like chicken skin, with blood on parts of it, and just skin looking on other parts!) and tomorrow I have an appointment at the Doctor, and once and for all I am going to find out what it is. I am worried it could be endometreosis, or again an apparent miscarriage. Will keep you updated!

I had the same thing happen to me almost, I am 17.

I was also diagnosed with HPV about 2 years ago,

I was a couple days late on my period, I just started taking this new birth controll for controlling my periods every 3 months ( bad idea ) when i finally started my period, it was brown and not so much blood as brown, then a large piece of skin fell out with some blood about 2 days in. It looked like chicken skin, with clumps of red on it and bumpy. I thought it was a miscarrage, it could have been. But i continued to take the pills and i am still experincing brown discharge with clumps of blood almost 2 weeks after. I have no idea what is wrong with me.it seems there have been several woman with the same problem as me but i want to see a docter really bad.

A reader, anonymous, writes (13 September 2007):

dont worry about it - i know exactly what you are describing because it happens to me almost every month. its the lining from your uterus. there is a lot of blood lost during a period and its not all from that one tiny little egg - all of the lining and tissue comes away too and thats what you have seen. its pretty shocking the first time you actually see it but its nothing to worry about it and doesnt mean you have had a miscarriage - if that was the case i've been having a miscarriage every month for 10 years! its just because you had an exceptionally heavy period for you and there may have been a little more tissue than usual. dont worry about it, theres nothing wrong with you but if you want to be extra extra sure there is no harm in seeing your GP or calling NHS24 they will put your mind at rest.

A reader, anonymous, writes (13 September 2007):

It was probably just a small clump of blood. Some women experience clumps like that during their period, especially at the beginning. Seems like I read somewhere that when the unfertilized egg drops into the uterus, if it is not joined with sperm, it is shed through your period, along with the membrane lining of your uterus. Most of the time it's just flushed out in your blood, but when there's clumpy, clotting going on, it may seem more apparent than at the times when your flow is more liquidy. You could always contact your healthcare provider and ask about it if you're still concerned or if you're experiencing any other weird symptoms.

A similar thing happened to me when I had an early miscarriage at about 6 weeks. If you were pregnant your would now have been "6 weeks" as well. It looked like a piece of liver (sorry to be so blunt) and I think it is your uterine lining that comes out. It is thick because of a pregnancy that it maintained. I was also very crampy. Go and see your GP to make sure you are OK.
