A female reader, deirdre Ireland +, writes (19 March 2015):

it is good that you have come online to educate yourself about this. please find some information about contraception, so that you know better how to prevent pregnancy. Tisha has given you an excellent link to finding reliable information. Your girlfriend can start to take contraception, but for now please use condoms to stop pregnancy. Dont have sex again without using contraception, this is the only way to prevent pregnancy.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (19 March 2015):

I have been using the fertility awareness method 100% effectively for the past 3 years. It has worked wonderfully for me and I have friends that use it, too.

That being said, I am VERY careful and methodical! I've been taking my temperature and checking my cervical fluid every day for the past 3 years! It's not just a guessing game. Sure, you could say, "have sex before day 10 or after day 20", but that's just NOT safe because every cycle is different. Some cycles I ovulate on Day 14, some on Day 22.

This is why the Fertility Awareness Method is safe, but the calendar/rhythm method is not. I encourage you and your girlfriend to abstain until you figure out a birth control option that works for you.

Also, her pain could be from a urinary tract infection...

A male reader, mfj78 United Kingdom +, writes (18 March 2015):

Hi there

I'm sorry if this is a little blunt but you admit to a lack of knowledge and understanding, which is fair enough, but you are old enough now to understand sex and contraception and having unprotected sex and hoping for the best is naïve at best and foolhardy at worst.

Unless your both will and ready to become parents start using condoms.

No method of contraceptive is 100% reliable. Despite the female anons claims, your GF and any other woman can become pregnant with condoms or the contraceptive pill, however if used correctly most methods of contraception work very well. (The pills effectiveness can be reduced by Antibiotics for example and incorrectly fitted condoms can break).

To answer your question directly a woman can become pregnant at any time. There is no time in her cycle when she cannot conceive as sperm can survive inside a womans body for many days, allowing conception to occur even if sex takes place long before your partner is fertile.

The only way to prevent pregnancy with any reliability is to use condoms and /or other methods of birth control such as contraceptive pill (Not the "morning after pill"), injections, coil or the various other methods available. Hoping to find a time when you can have unprotected sex when she wont become pregnant is asking for a baby to be made!

Your partner is displaying signs of what could be a sexually transmitted infection or other condition that needs to be treated. A discharge from her vagina and smelly urine could indicate an infection that you could easily contract yourself (or have passed on to her) by having unprotected sex.

As well as reducing the risk of pregnancy, condoms are important to protect against disease and infection.

Your GF needs to see a doctor.

A female reader, CattyCat United Kingdom +, writes (18 March 2015):

CattyCat agony auntShe may have a urine infection if there is pain when she wee's.

If she took the pill, she's not pregnant.

If you used a condom correctly, she's not pregnant.

The best thing to do is to take a pregnancy test or go to the doctor's.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (18 March 2015):

Have you had sex with other women before your girlfriend? You should both see a doctor, as you could have given her an infection. If she has slept with other men, then she may give you an infection.

Do not have sex unless you have, and know how to properly use, a condom. Speak with a doctor, first go separately and get yourselves tested for sexually transmitted diseases and then visit a doctor together to learn about contraception.

A female reader, Tisha-1 United States +, writes (18 March 2015):

Tisha-1 agony auntA lady can't get pregnant if she is in menopause or if she has had a tubal ligation or a hysterectomy. Otherwise, she could get pregnant anytime semen is introduced into her vagina.

Can she not see her doctor and acquire birth control? Why aren't you using condoms?

Here are some resources for you to read: http://www.plannedparenthood.org/health-info/birth-control

There are so-called fertility awareness methods used to time when a woman is less likely to become pregnant, but those require a great deal of knowledge and preparation. You can read about them here: http://www.plannedparenthood.org/health-info/birth-control/fertility-awareness

If your girlfriend feels pain in her stomach, smelly discharge from her urine and her vagina, then she needs to see her doctor as soon as possible anyway.

Best wishes.
