A female reader, Carina South Africa +, writes (22 February 2007):

Carina agony auntIt depends what bad thing in the past it was, but generally a good start is to write a list of all the positive things that came out of it. For example, something good you did, or something new you learned about yourself. Anything you can think of. We all gain from mistakes and bad things and those things help us move on to the future and do better next time. If you have someone who has hurt you badly then write down all the negative things you can think of about them. Then whenever you're feeling sad because of happy memories look at the list to remind you how bad it really was. Start to focu on the future. Think of some projects for yourself, whether it's getting fit, learning something new, like karate or painting, making some new friends. Think of things you feel really interested in and fill in your spare time doing what you enjoy. Watch lots of comedy on TV. Laughing is fantastic for your mood. Avoid listening to music or watching films that bring you down. Whenever you think of the past imagine it as a picture fading far away from you. If you have any photos or objects that remind you of the bad time, put them away for a while where you can't see them. In time you will definitely feel better and the bad time will become a very distant memory. There's so much fun and excitement in life ahead for you. Just think of that as much as you can. Big hug.
