Dear cupid. What is the difference between having a girl as a best friend and having a girl as your girlfriend? Im 16 and my best friend is 15. Im asking this because im best friends with a girl and we are really close. The only thing we don't do is kiss and have sex but we do sometimes hug and hold hands. So is there any difference?

with a girlfriend, your heart races whenever you see her, touch her, think of her, you get the point. for a friend who is a girl, you are more like sisters and brothers, really close siblings who share everthing. maybe you might find comfort in each other, but there is no passionate beating of the heart as you will find in a bf/gf relationship.

willywombat agony auntA friendship does not involve any physical contact of a sexual nature. Like kissing, petting, sex.....

Having a Gf is usually a little more *full-on* with a least a bit of snogging.

This freindship could develop into something more or it could stay as a close friendship.

Hope this helps a little.

smeedle agony auntFriendships like the one you have with this girl are so special and should if possible be left as friendship, you both have a bond and support and rely on each other, why complicate it by trying to decide what it is, just enjoy it for what it is.

A female reader, Bev Conolly Australia +, writes (6 March 2006):

Bev Conolly agony auntYes, that's a main difference. A girl who's your friend can be emotionally intimate, but not sexual. A girlfriend (ideally) is everything that your best-girl-friend is, but also sexually attractive, so that you want to kiss her and be physically intimate.

Actually, you might want to give your best friend another look as girlfriend material, because people that you can be emotionally open and vulnerable with are harder to find than any other type of relationship.

It could also be that your best friend sees you as potentially more than a friend, already.

Hope that this helps.

i personally dont think there that much of a difference. because a girlfriend is a person you share you most inner most secrets, you love them more then anything, you'll do anything for them, it hurts you to see them hurt same as really close friend. but the love you feel for a friend is different than the love you feel for a girlfriend. the love you feel for a girlfriend run more deeper...than that of a friendship. it's like finally you feel complete....like you souls flowing all the time...thats how i feel for my boyfriend. its just mostly how you feel for the person thats where the difference lies. but thats just what i think.
