A reader, anonymous, writes (20 March 2007):

Go to the doctors right away. Get it sorted out today. There is nothing to be ashamed of when it comes to depression. I have been there. I went to see a counsellor and was put on Citalpram. This all helped me to help myself. There is only one person in the world who can help you and that is yourself. But never feel lonely because you can get in touch with me at any time. I have been to depth of depression and back again. "It is a lonely street where only a few of the lights are turned on". Never ever despair, you are not alone and a doctor will be very sympathetic without being patronising. Please go today and let me know. God bless and i send you a big HUG.

Take care

Friend Tom agony auntAgreed. Never postpone telling your docor you are feeling depressed. It may be many things, including just poor diet or life style. He will make an examination and probably do a blood work-up. Don't be afraid of the questions. He is a professional. If he feels it is true depression, he may even refer you to another doctor. This is alright, too. It happens to many people at times. Don't postpone.

A female reader, perkypanda United States +, writes (20 March 2007):

I've had very different reactions when talking to my family doctor. One wouldn't suggest anything except "see a psycologist", the other wrote me a perscription for an anti-depression, no questions asked. It's a scary thing to do, telling this person who knows everything about you physically but nothing of you personally a deep dark secret, but its the only way to get help. If they don't offer medicine (or if you don't want medicine) they will hopefully send you to someone who can help you.

A female reader, rhythmandblues2 United States + , writes (20 March 2007):

rhythmandblues2 agony auntThere is nothing to be scared of. Be very honest about why you think you are depressed, what are some of the symptoms you are having, your doctor will ask you questions about all of that, just answer honestly.

He will most likely prescribe an antidepressant or anti anxiety medications or both, and you will start out on a low dose, and go back for check ups to see how you are getting along, your dosage may change, or you may try a couple of different medications if one does not work well for you.

There are a lot of new medicines out there that have little or no side effects and no sexual side effects, and you should start feeling much better soon....

You will be glad you did and hopefully this will help change your black moods and make you feel joy of life again.
