What should I do in this terribly strange work situation?

A female United Kingdom age 26-29, anonymous writes:

I am currently doing a 12 month apprenticeship in Business Admin at a company in the city centre. The company only just started at the beginning of this year, so they are new to the industry this is why I thought having the opportunity would be a great thing for me as I could work my way up throughout the business and become manager one day.

However, two months into the apprenticeship my manager/boss left, leaving me with no boss and no work. Not long after this I went on holiday, expecting the director of the company to find a new person to become the manager. However when I returned from my holiday there was still no manager and several people had quit there jobs also.

That left myself, the head of operations and the director in the office.

This was in July and they still haven't found a new manager, any other employees or given me any work to do.

As I am through a company because it is an apprenticeship and I need to be assessed I don't know whether to talk to them about it first?

I really don't like the job and I don't think business admin is something I want to do, it has gotten to a point where I hate coming to work as there is usually no one in the office but myself, I never have any work to do and it's so lonely and boring. This is supposed to finish in May 2016 but I genuinely don't think I can last that long in this situation.

I don't know what to do, please could somebody give me any help or advice on what I should do in this situation please?

olderthandirt agony auntThis has to be the strangest position ever. Off the top of my head it sounds like the "company" never really got going and it just kind of self-destructed.I don't know what if anything the company produced or was doing but I'd bet it doesn' exist anymore and some investor lost his/her shirt on a failed idea. Good luck with your job search.

Honeypie agony auntTalk to the company who is going to assess you. And see if you can get your apprenticeship either terminated or transferred to another company.

I think the BIGGEST reason you don't like the job, is because you have nothing to do.

So if you CAN transfer and finish it up elsewhere it MIGHT be beneficial for you, even IF business admin is not what you want to do long term, at least you will have a FINISHED apprenticeship under your belt and PLENTY of time to think what your next "work adventure" should be.

If you can NOT transfer, talk to them about your options.

This is perhapssomething you could have addressed earlier but better late than never. I work in admin and if i run out of work the 1st thing i do is contact anyone higher than me stating i have no work to do and could they sort something out for me. If they have zero work then it seems pointless you even going into office. Request more work and if that doesnt work out then request a transfer through the company. Maybe talk to company anyway, they can help push things along for you.
