What does the saying..."dont wear your heart on your sleeve" mean?

when this thing happened between the guy i like, in my catering course, two weeks ago, he found out that i like him and somthing happened, as the guys mate, who is also my mate. well the guy i like his mate came over and said stop staring at him, its annoying him. well i got upset, i told my tutor about it and she must of said somthing and that the guy i like, the mate who made me cry, he didnt mean to hurt my feelings, its just the way he said it. she said "dont wear your heart on your sleeve" just go with the flow and get to know him a bit more, but what does that mean, ive never heard that saying before.

Dont wear your heart on your sleeve means dont set it in such an easy area for people to be able to rip it off tear it off and destroy your loving heart because people are ravenous and full of madness they could care less about you there more worried about themself.

Lostandalone agony auntFrom my reading I found that sometime in the earlier centuries in Europe. Men would pin the name of their lovers or the woman they loved on their sleeves. Therefore thats were the original statement comes from but I agree with Pete it does mean your emotions are very visible and it doesn't take much to upset or excite you.

Yeah someone said that to me once, it was after we were having just a normal conversation about life. They meant it in a good way but I guess it could be seen as a bad thing too. I think it means you are sensitive; emotional, your feelings are more "visable" rather than being closed up. I don't think it's a bad thing, necessarily...

it means dont expose your emotions/feelings in an obvious manner/ place! sometimes it's best to keep them so they arn't so obvious! then u wont get hurt as easily!
