Question - (2 February 2008) 4 Answers - (Newest, 2 February 2008)
A male United Kingdom age 18-21, anonymous writes:

Hey,

Me and my partner are both virgins and about to have sex for the first time, but we have one issue.

I want to use a condom, but she doesn't.

She says it isn't necessary as we are both virgins, and she is going to take the pill to make sure she doesn't get pregnant.

What do you suggest?

Thanks for your help.

Salad_Barbarian agony auntUnless you want a child I suggest you use a condom no matter what. I've heard far too many stories of sexual partners who either forget to take (or lie about taking) the necessary birth control pills. Never rely on anyone else when it comes to contraception.

xdarkendhopex agony auntYou should deffinatly still use a condom. Some pills are only 75% affective against pregnancy! And if you don't want any chance of her getting pregnant I highly recomend it.

DoubleM agony auntThere are several different types and brands.

Assuming that she is also of legal age in your country, I would suggest that you find out when the pill she plans on taking becomes most effective, and do all you can to ensure that she is taking it as directed.

Most are reportedly very effective if taken on schedule, but there is still a degree of risk for pregnancy.

Schedule your activity within about a week of her menstrual period to somewhat lessen the likelihood of conception.

A female reader, rhythmandblues2 United States + , writes (2 February 2008):

rhythmandblues2 agony auntShe is going to take the pill to make sure she doesn't get pregnant? The pill takes one month cycle to become effective, during that time if you have sex you will need to use another form of protection like condoms and spermicidal foam....As far as std's are concerned, make sure you both have a physical exam, as clamydia can go undetected and can cause some serious problems especially for her if contracted....otherwise, if you are sexually faithful, std's would most likely not be an issue...and the pill is nearly 99% effective IF USED CORRECTLY.
