A female United Kingdom age 16-17, anonymous writes:

I'm overweight, and I know I am. I don't think I can remember a time where I've ever been comfortable with my body and I think it's time to do something about it, as I think that it's my weight that is putting guys off me. I know that if someone likes someone, then it doesn't matter what they look like, but face it, it is appearance that you first notice about someone and attraction is one of the factors of liking someone.

But I'm really struggling about how to lose weight. I refuse to tell my parents about it, (we generally eat healthy meals at home anyway) but I want to take up exercise. However, I'm too embarassed to do anything publically, like running, I'm too afraid people will see me do it etc.

Any suggestions?

well there are gyms and places that have things just to help people loose weight. if you have a big enough space jump roping is a great excersise. I persaonlly prefer running/walking on a tredmill(which is in a gym). I personaliy when ever I hvae a chance ni my room listen to dance music and dance it actually is quite invigorating but I do this a side thing along with other activites...you say you eat healthy which is good but cutting portions can help too. Instead of going for 2 slices of pizzas go for 1 and a half then one. Eat slowly too can help keep weight off. Many people complain that I eat to slow but in the long run it is better for me as the food digests in small amounts.

Remebr there is no fast easy way to take off weight but if you work hard and have fun it can seem so fast so easy....if you contuine to have no weight lss and are stil over ask your doctor im sure he or she will be glad to help(and its confidental)

Good Luck!

You can fit exercise into your life with regular activities like doing chores at a fast pace to music, walking to make errands, dancing in your bedroom, and doing stretches/yoga between study breaks.

What happened when I went to college was I lost like 30 lbs and I didnt know why- but then I realized what it was: try to eat only organic raw produce and protein- most foods that are packaged are filled with chemicals and cafffeine that make your body believe that you need more of whatever it is you are eating- it doesnt fil you up- also WALK WALK WALK- it should be at a somewhat steady pace but if you walk for long periods of time( over an hour or two) instead of driving, try biking or walking to your destination- and within a week or two you will feel amazing- there is time for it- walk to do your errands, walk to school, walk to work whatever, dont worry about feeling sweaty or ugly because you are doing a beautiful thing for yourself! Good luck

LIERIN agony auntHey you

I absolutely understand, what are you talking about.

I have lost 60pounds since November 2006 and I couldn't be happier with my body now. I don't want to say, I was completely unhappy before .... I had some guys ... and I think I was looking good ... BUT ... lets face it ... GUYS DO CARE ABOUT HOW YOUR BODY LOOKS ..

So .. how did I do it?

I stoped eating flour, fat and carbs ... I eat very healthy food ... lots of vegetables and fruit .. also nuts and meat ... I found out that Soy and some other vegetarian food is very good too.

Excercise ... I walk a lot ... I sold my car and walk everywhere!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nothing stopes me. I also do joga and go to the gym once in a while ...

I will keep my fingers cross for you .. and Hope that you will get to your goal!

XO,Lierin

cd206 agony auntMake an appointment to visit your doctor or a nutritionist. They can help you put together a healthy eating plan that means you can lose weight but not be constantly hungry. I guess the most important thing to remember is not to get disheartened when it doesnt happen immediately. After all, if you lose a pound a week that will total to over 4 stone in a year and I'm guessing you don't need to lose that much. Exercise can be done anywhere. If you don't want to run in public run up and down stairs until you're really breathing hard, or dance around like a fool to your fave CD. A person who doesn't want to lose weight should exercise for 20mins 3 times a week. When I'm dieting I make it 30mins 4 times a week. I also advise keeping a food diary. I thought I ate really healthy until I realised that there were more calories in a can of coke than some chocolate bars and that I was snacking probably more than I thought I was. If I can help you with anything else please get in touch.

A male reader, sleepyhollow American Samoa +, writes (25 May 2007):

According to some health sources, running one mile and walking one mile burn around the same amount of calories. Naturally, running one mile is faster than walking it, but the point is the calories.

So, here's how to go about losing weight without attracting attention to the fact that you're doing it.

Wear sneakers every day. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Go for walks, and take a camera or sketch book, or even just an iPod loaded up with your favorite music. Call it thinking time, or time to enjoy a new hobby of taking pictures of flowers and birds, or sketching.

And then cut back on your eating. Control your carb intake. Don't worry, you don't have to starve yourself. Between reducing your eating by about 1/5 and increasing your activity level you'll lose weight slowly but surely, and probably collect some pretty nifty pictures.

Eventually, when you feel comfortable, you can actually start dressing the part of someone out there to exercise and start jogging and walking. Good luck.

And yes, a healthy you is a key way to improve your self-confidence and help you project the kind of image that people home in on as attractive.
