A female United Kingdom age 26-29, anonymous writes:

I was not born in the UK I moved here when I was 8. I thought that if a child is not born in this country then they can't get child benefits or tax whatever.

A letter can through today from HM revenue and customs about tax credits award with my college progress report enclosed with it because they were returning it back. It's addressed to my mum but she can't have sent t she's not literate so it has to be my dad. Am 18 and I go to college doing BTEC IT my dad only gives me £10 a week only when college is on. I get nothing when there is no college. It also says in the letter

"I have reviewed the information you have us and so not need to amend your award" what does that mean

Is my dad getting money for me. Am suspecting that if the money is meant to be for me then am not getting what I should. Because I could do with a new bed and a laptop for IT. Am depressed because I can't get a job to buy cloths. Most of my shoes have holes and whenever it rains I get wet feet which is not nice. For Christmas I only got £50 which I spent on a new bra which I hope to last long which cost £15 and two paires of shoes and a top, which is all you can really get for £50, the other day he was lecturing me about my cloths telling me all my friends dress well and have nice cloths and then he asked me about the £50 why was he expecting 10 bags of shopping we all know that £50 is not really much now a days nothing is cheap. I he is getting tax credits, child benefit or whatever for me then why can't he give me that. My second sister all her cloths a tight. My da uses the old excuse that I spend all money I get on batteries which get me mad because I don't do that. Can somone please explain this tax credits award

I do BTEC level 2 in IT

And there are 4 kids in the family

A female reader, AuntyEm United Kingdom +, writes (12 March 2014):

AuntyEm agony auntTax credits are awarded to those working with a low income and dependents (children). The person working gets some of the tax that they pay back. The amount of tax credits recieved is worked out on the previous years earnings so if your dad or mum earns more this year, it will affect their payments next year. If they do not declare earnings then the tax office can stop or demand that money back at any time.

Child benefit is for the benefit of the children but the payments for each child are reduced if there is more than one child in the family. Your parents get child benefit for you because you are still in college...when you leave, that payment will stop and your parents tax credits will also be reduced because you will be old enough to earn your own income. Your dad gives you £10 a week, that would probably be the amount he gets for child benefit for you.

It seems your family has very little to live on and maybe cannot afford to buy you new clothes and shoes, so it would probably be best to keep trying to find a job, even if it's just cleaning or working in a shop.

If you think you and your siblings are being neglected and not clothed and fed properly then that is a different matter but really it looks like your folks are struggling to support you in college and you might just have to stick it out until you get a job and can start providing for yourself.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (12 March 2014):

That money is actually your parents, it's to go towards feeding /housing dependant children, however as a student there may be bursaries you're entitled to, these differ depending on course and country so ask at your college.

A male reader, anonymous, writes (12 March 2014):

If you are at college and still love living with your father then he has every right to use the money as he is still supporting you. That money will cover utilities and food etc. The money goes direct to the main carer as they're the ones providing a roof over your head.

Tisha-1 agony auntI found a link which may be able to help you: https://www.childline.org.uk/Pages/Home.aspx

Or ring 0800 1111 and ask to speak to someone about your question. They will be better able to point you in the right direction.

Another thing you could do is pop down to your college's counselor and ask this question. They'll have loads more knowledge about this than we aunts here at DC might. They may also have some idea where you might be able to obtain a laptop as well.

If your shoes have holes, be sure to show your Dad or take pictures of them before you throw them away. If they have holes they aren't much help, are they?

I guess you feel you have to write in her because you don't feel your Dad is supporting you well enough and you don't trust him. That must feel very uncomfortable.

Have you tried sitting down with him and go over the situation about your clothing and the batteries and your needs for school?

Honeypie agony auntI think your best bet is to call HM revenue and see if anyone can help you.

HOWEVER, if you are OVER 18 and your DAD is paying for your classes, food, utilities the money might be towards HIS cost of raising you and your siblings.

IF you DO not work, how can you EARN any tax return money? You don't get money JUST for existing.

As for clothes. Maybe look into second hand shops/ Thrift-stores you can find some good items too.

A female reader, like I see it United States +, writes (12 March 2014):

like I see it agony auntI'm not familiar with the laws in the UK but more information would be useful...

Who pays for your tuition?

What about housing, food, and so on?

For tax purposes, is he legally able to claim you as a dependent?

Thanks!
