Smelly problem!

A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

So I'm with this guy and I really like him. I've been with him for 5 months but recently he has started asking me to do stuff with him. I don't mind as I feel ready I'm just really nervous about doing anything as it will be my first time (for everything) :/

Also this is extremely embarassing but I have a problem with my lady bits :/ I've started getting a lot of discharge and it smells. I shower every day and always make sure I'm clean but it doesn't really make any difference.

Could there be something wrong down there? This is also off putting as my boyfriend wants to finger me and I'm really embarrassed as it smells.

Has anyone got any advice as what I can do?

kellyxxx agony auntThe doctor doesn't always have to look down there. Sometimes if you give a good enough description of symptoms they will prescribe something relevant and do it through trial and error.x

needtoknow35 agony aunti wouldnt douche i am a registered nurse and douching will onlt spread the bacteria around if indeed it is an infection. i would suggest first go to the drug store they have what you call a vaginal screening kit you use to diagnose an infection and its color coded take the test what ever color it turns you look on the chart and it tells what the infection is if its a simple yeast infection thats what it sounds like you can use the one dose vaginal cream such as vagistat 1 most creams kills mostly all types of bacterial vaginosis exept for trichomoniasis and chlamydia if this discharge is followed by painful sex or abdominal cramping then more than likely thais is what it is. if not then its just probably an ordinary yeast infection and if the cream does work and stop the discharge but the odor is still there you can use norforms is a vaginal suppository you insert abour 5-6 hours before having sex it helps control odor

Just go to the doctor. They deal with this sort of thing everyday. If you are mature enough to have sex with someone then surely you are mature enough to see a medical professional if you have a problem? Doctors won't care what it looks like, trust me.

Your doctor will have seen everything all before. But you need to go because it could develop into something very nasty. Better safe than sorry.

kellyxxx agony auntThis sounds like bacterial vaginosis, however I'm not a doctor, I just work in a pharmacy... Go to a doctor and see what the actual problem is. If its itchy then it could be thrush. Whatever the problem is, I'm sure its not too serious, but you will need treatment for it. If it is bv then that comes because the pH balance of the vagina has been altered (too much washing with cosmetic shower gels can do this) so no matter how much you wash, the smell is always going to return. I'm sure it will be very simple to treat. Good luck with everything.x

Boredatwork agony auntSometime washing to much can causes a problem as you wash away the good bacteria. Also be careful with what you actually clean yourself with.

But always best to get checked at the doctor, he will probably take a sawp and check for bacteria levels, painless and nothing to worry about.

A female reader, veronika Australia +, writes (16 February 2010):

veronika agony auntIf it smells unusual "down there" then you could have an infection, like a yeast infection or thrush or something. Just go to the doctor. If the smell is really strong, just washing it probably won't make it go away.

Go to the doctor. You might have an infection or something. Don't feel bad or be embarrassed. Just make sure you're healthy.
