Should I even try to make this relationship work?

Ok so I met my ex through my best friend because her bf is really good friends with him. We had a connection right away but I put off hanging out with him for awhile because I was unsure about getting into another relationship. But no matter how mean I was and how much I ignored him he was so freakin persistent. Then we started dating and every thing was great for the first two weeks. Then his dad started to make him really angry and his attitude towards me really changed. He would just party with his friends and get wasted every night and see me like once a week. Anywho then he got a dui and I knew our relationship was over at this point. So I left for a month for a job and recently came back. I saw him and he was acting like we were dating again and I was then he hugged me before I left and I patted him on the back and told him to keep in touch...which I don't think he was impressed with. Then I tried calling him at 6am but I'm not sure if he saw that I called cause he never picked up. Then today I saw him and he said hey what's up and then pretty much ignored me. Should I even bother trying to make this work? Or should I just leave him be? Thanks :)
