A female United States age 18-21, anonymous writes:

Soon, I'll be 18, and I'm extremely excited! Now, i'll be living the teenage life.

I've been hoping for piercings, and tattoos for a very long time now! And this is the age when i'm legally allowed too.

[[trust me, i don't plan on being addicted to tattoos. I'm totally against people getting stuff that doesn't make sense, or have no meaning. So far, i only want one tat, and its a memorial of my father and it'll be in a spot where i can hide it easily.]]

I don't plan on looking like a freak. But i have been wanting some piercings in some common places [[example-lip.]]

but what im so confused about is...i'm on my way to college, and soon after that- my career choice is to become a early childhood teacher [[preschool]].

Now, i believe that they should totally drop the age, b/c...im not going to be enjoying my crazy stage for long. Piercings can be quite a price...and it'll be stupid to only have it for 2 years, and having to take them out.

Plus, i'll be getting a job soon, and..i'll never get a job with shit all over my face.

Whats the point in allowing 18 years get peircings, if they can't even wear them long?

What should i do? i know this is lame, but ive always wanted piercings etc. You gotta atleast do something ONCE! but...how do teens get all this shit on their face and arms, and still get jobs?!

SirenaBlusera agony auntI wouldn't discriminate against someone just because he or she had a piercing or a tattoo. I believe in the cliché that you can't judge a book by its cover, and all that. Ditto for men with long hair.

There are some things you should keep in mind, though:

1. Tattoos are permanent... remember, you have your whole life to get a tattoo. Wait and think about whether you REALLY want it, you have nothing to lose.

2. Is it in a place where it can be easily concealed, if you needed to do that, for some reason?

3. Your health... make sure to check the place out.

I have a couple of sites that might help:

jessica04 agony auntThe first thing I did when I turned 18 was run out and get a tattoo. I was always the girl who had a different hair color each week, and I totally agree that your teenage years are the time to be able to get pierced and be crazy.

As far as a job is concerned, lots of places are totally cool with facial piercings as long as you either put a bandage over it, or put in a clear piercing, which keeps holes from closing until you're off your shift.

Some places are even very cool with tattoos, but if you want to be a teacher, schools will make you cover them. All of my tattoos are very easily covered unless it bathing suit season.

My advice is to really plan out tattoos, don't just get one on a random Sat night. And really take a look around your town at different artists and make sure you like their work.

Have fun, and live it up, don't be afraid of 2 years from now. Some of my most professional friends have some of the craziest tattoos and piercings I've ever seen. One is a body-modification model even!

A female reader, Irish49 Canada + , writes (1 March 2009):

Irish49 agony auntHere in Canada, where I live I see teenagers as young as 14 years old with tattoos and piercings. A friends of my son's is 17 and she has 6 piercings on her face alone! Nice girl, just loves those piercings! So many of them get them, but they need 'parental consent' to do so.

Listen hun, get your piercing/s if you want. You only live once. Personally, I feel too many of them on the face looks rather tacky, but kids love em. If you get a job, you can take the studs/rings out and put them back in weekends and in your free/spare time. It's not that big of a deal.

And yes, there are places that do hire kids, piercings, tats and all. Some employers just don't worry about it and many don't judge a kid's ability to work hard based on his piercings. It's a trend right now. Go get them done, keep them clean and don't worry about it.

But as stated above, if you apply for a job, it may be a good idea to find out their policy on wearing a ring or stud in the lip...or better yet, just take it out and wear it after work. Good luck and have fun. You are young..live life sensibly though and stay safe!

A female reader, SJ_ninety United States +, writes (1 March 2009):

SJ_ninety agony auntSome jobs allow for freedom of expression. Personally, I think it should be that way everywhere, but there is such a thing called "professionalism". I don't have any tattoos (though I'm getting one in a well-hidden place myself) and only three piercings - one in each ear, though I never wear earrings for some reason and a belly-button ring, which is easily hidden. As for becoming a pre-school teacher, I don't think the parents of a bunch of four and five year olds would want the teacher to be covered in tattoos and piercings. If you decide to get any of those, I suggest you get piercings in places that are, in fact, easily hidden. You've already done the right thing by deciding to get that "memorial to dad" in a well-hidden area. In most places, however, nose-rings and lip-rings are actually permitted as long as you have in a clear ring during work hours. Otherwise, everything is best in moderation. Have fun, enjoy being 18, and be careful! =]

XxAnGelXxx agony auntI know loads and loads of people covered in tattoos and piercings and who have jobs ranging from working in a posh hotel/conference center to office jobs to bar workers to care givers. I guess it all comes down to how laid back the main person employing you is?

Tongue, belly button and ears are common and you can pierce them. Tongue you can hide.. it's cool but painful. Ears the nub if you dnt have it and all the way up. Bellybutton you can get the top and bottom or left and right or all four. Those can be fun, different and easy to hide if you want a job. If you want a face piercing a small nose one at the most because you can't heal. Lip, eyebrow and any piercing actually once you have it for awhile it's there for ever. My parents have the same tattoo. Dad upper left arm and mom's left ankle cuz my dad has a joint disease that hurts to put his ring on they can both hide it easy so no worries. just the right spot for a tattoo.
