writes:I've been talking for four months daily with this man on the Internet. He's really, really nice and understanding. He barely ever showed his picture. Twice and he looked good looking. Today's my birthday and I asked for him to send a photo even if he looked like crap..and he did. He looks old and creepy and it looks like his hair is thinning. He did say he's 39 but..there are hot middle aged med out there. I wanted to disappear after I saw it but knew it'd he rude and harsh. I still want to do it. I started going over if I had ever revealed personal information. He only knows my middle name and Skype (I don't have personal info there). I'd only told him I am really in puerto rico and am planning on moving to Raleigh, NC next year.. Dx (is that had? Tell me it's not) what do I do? Am I just being shallow? I think not. I want to throw the bomb and disappear but he'll feel bad..

reader, anonymous, writes (23 November 2010): It's probably best not to tell him why but you should definitely let him know that you don't think it's going to work. Dissapearing is a bit cruel if i'm honest.

 It has only been 4 months and you two do not really even know one another. If you simply stopped talking to him, he would be confused and possibly quite ashamed if he figures out that it was because of the picture but, I doubt it would hurt him.

Yes it is wrong, rude and shallow to just disappear. You have obviously made your decision, but you need to be up front and tell him you have decided to take things no further.
