I want to dump my girlfriend but i dont know how.

We have been going out for a year and i have gone off her. I know it sounds really mean but i cant help how i feel. I have fallen out of love and dont fancy her anymore.

I dont want to hurt her that much because i know it will hurt whatever i do. Any advice on letting her down gently greatly appreciated

A female reader, Emilysanswers United Kingdom +, writes (22 February 2009):

You just have to be honest with her. Tell her that you don't feel the same as you used to.

She will cry and ask what she did wrong and you are going to hurt her. But you have to just be honest, and tell her you love her more as a sister and friend now than a girlfriend.

These things happen in life and breaking up is something you have to do.

Give her space to get over you after you do it. Don't try and be her friend straight away.

Also do NOT tell her after you have broken up that you miss her or still love her or anything. She will only think she has a chance of getting back with you.

Good Luck!! xx
