Yep that's normal, mine was the same and I asked my mum about it.
Remember that it's not normal blood but full of baby making goop, so full of more iron and other stuff what would make it darker. Plus your body is not great at making it yet so probably hasn't quite got the recipe right. It'll get a bit lighter as you get to your later teens but will always be a bit brown and gooey and horrible.
In olden days they used to call it "the women's curse." If it's a heavy flow don't worry about using tampons and towels at the same time. If you have problems with it then going on the pill can make it lighter and more regular. But if you can avoid it then don't take the pill till you start having regular sex as stuffing your body full of hormones for years on end isn't great in the long run.
Good Luck!! xx

My first period (many, many years ago!) was that way. It was very dark and very heavy. It almost looked more like feces in my mind and I thought I was ill or that something was very wrong with me. Even now, the blood is often very dark when heavy and towards the end rather brown, even though pale and light.
