My long distance boyfriend broke up with me for family reasons. What should I do?

A female Canada age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I've dated for boyfriend for 9 months now, 6 of which he has lived on the other side of the country. It's a two day drive to get there, so we normally just fly back and forth. I'm still here in the city in which I've been born and raised. I'm very close with my family, and my younger brother is currently battling a life-threatening illness. My boyfriend was supposed to be living out there for 2 years, but now he says that he most likely will not be coming back, and so he broke up with me because he feels that it is selfish for him to ask me to leave my family, especially my brother, to go there and be with him. He told me he loves me still, and he wants to be with me, but he does not want me to leave my family for him. He won't let me go there and be with him, yet he still wants to be with me. I love him very much and I feel that if we both put an effort in, our relationship could work, and eventually one of us would have to move (I would not mind moving there). I'm not sure what to do now. Should I just let him go? Or try to persuade him into allowing me to leave my family?

A male reader, sebaslookingforward Argentina +, writes (30 March 2011):

You're an adult. why would you ask YOUR EX BF for permission to leave? You can leave if you want to.

Maybe he does not want you to visit him because there's something he's hiding?

Talk to him and see why he does not want you to move. Tell him you want to move, and ask him to be honest if necessary

good luck
