 well maybe if you go out for a drink with him or speak to him, then maybe starting a conversation on something different then asking so how come you havent got a girlfreind? just not intrested? he may reply back no im gay or not intrested in girls like being singel! if you have a suspision on him lieing if you get on well with his family maybe asking a member why he doesnt have a girlfreind! but if he is not gay then i would advice you not to try it on him or anything like that, and just to leave it and try going to gay clubs to try and meet some one!

well the best way is to be honest, just tell him how you feel about him and if he accepts it then try to make it work, or you could make friends with him first then you could tell him it will be easier for both of you to accept.

Well, you could always try just being friends with him first. After getting to know him better, you might not have to ask at all.
Also, do you know any of his friends? It might be easier to ask someone else if they know. This way it would avoid any potential embarassment for the both of you. Just make sure whoever it is you talk to won't be an idiot towards you after you ask.
This might sound kind of silly, but another suggestion is to see if he has a myspace or something similar - a lot of people write their sexual orientation on those sites.
