hi i just got bit by my dog

i went to kiss him and he must have panicked or something and bit my lip

hes never done this before.

anyway it hurts but not too bad

my lip has doubled in size due to swelling

the cute doesnt seem to be too deep

and stopped bleeding badly after 15 mins

what im worried about is the scar?

hes only a small dachshund so its not as if hes a big dog really

thing is im going on holiday next week on a cruise and i dont really want a big scar/cut/mark for then as with me being 16 years old my appearance is really important to me

so what should i do?

SirenaBlusera agony auntNeosporin will help prevent scarring!!

You may need to get a tetanus shot or stitches. Get this checked out by a doctor.

bubbloo24 agony auntHave you had a tetnus jab, hun? You need to make sure you don't catch anything from that nasty bite.

I'm sure it'll be looking a lot better by next week though, and like satindesire says, keep it clean so that it doesn't get infected.

I hope it feels a lot better soon.

I had a similar accident when I was 16, so I know how you feel. I did scar because no-one told me how to take care of my lip, and everyone heals and scars differently. First off...do you need stitches? If you do, get off the computer and go to the doctor :)

That being said, there are a few things you can do to minimize scarring...put ice on it immediately.

Getting the torn edges to line up and ultimately grow back together with the least amount of 'ridging' will help. You can help this my coaxing the edges together so the tear looks like it fits...kind of like a jigsaw puzzle. Use a butterfly stitch or skin glue to hold it in place while your body heals. Keep the wound moist and to prevent infection (dogs mouths DO have a lot of bacteria!!!) you can use a triple antibiotic ointment on it several times a day (this will help keep it moist as well). Lastly, I have never tried the ointments shown on t.v. ...your pharmacist can point you in the right direction... but there are products designed to minimize scarring. I also know an essential oil called lavendar works well on scars.

P.S. I'm not a doctor, but I hope this helps you.

A reader, anonymous, writes (24 June 2009):

Well you don't have to be 16 to be concerned about your appearance so we understand. Scarring is genetic actually, to my understanding. Look at how easily you have scarred in the past and base your future lip off of that. Healing as well. Some people take a week, some people take a couple days. Me.. well, I take three years I think, and then i scar. -_-'

Just take care of yourself.
