Since I'm automatically on guard whenever a person I don't know wants to talk to me, the first thing I'd want is his name, a genuine smile, and the reason he wants to talk.
Call me a cynical old squasher-of-romance, but anything less puts my stranger-danger rader on high alert.
Here's a starter that works for me: "Hi, I'm Michael. I noticed that you're reading War and Peace, which I just finished. What do you think of the part where..."

The first thing any guy should say to any woman is a simple "hello" "hey" "hi"... tell her your name, shake her hand, start a conversation, w/e... if she is interested in you things will go from there... :)
