I've missed FIVE periods now... could I be pregnant?

Question - (24 February 2007) 8 Answers - (Newest, 13 March 2007)
A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I recently had sex with my boyfriend and the condom broke. I tried to get the morning after pill at two chemists, but couldn't get it for this reason:

I haven't had a period since early september, for no particular reason, which isn't pregnancy, as I did 3 pregnancy tests which were negative. I've missed 5 periods now, and when I had sex, I still hadn't had one.

How effective will a pregnancy test be? I've heard that they're not really effective if you're not having periods. I had them regularly for four years and now they've just gone. I got tested for polycystic ovarian syndrome, but I haven't got that - doctors don't know what the problem is.

What should I do?

Leyla* agony aunthi

dont worry sweetie, i can honestly say that it amy be due to hormonal changes, ive been through the same situation when i was younger, it could be to do with eating the wrong foods, try eating a healthy balenced diet as it could mean signs and symptoms of being annoxeric or ballemic or try visiting a female GP (doctor) and asking for advice, they are usually very friendly and sometimes the problem couldnt be as bad as you thought, remember if you do appear to be pregnant and you are 100% sure you dont want to keep the child you can terminiate the pregnancy up to 24 weeks

good luck sweet and hope all turns out well for you x

If you dont have a period, you more then likely can't ovulate, so im not sure if you are pregnant, if there is a lot of stress in your life it can really mess with the hormones.... but your best bet is to go get an ultra sound done just to make sure that your not pregnant, becuase when i was pregnant with my son, i never found out till i was almost six months pregant becuase every pregnancy test i took would come out negative, and then i got an ultra sound and i saw my baby.... So I would double check with an ultra sound they are more effective than a pregnancy test obviosly....

I'm no doctor, but it might be that your hormones have gone all strange because of stress, weight gain, or significant weight loss. A couple of years ago, I was going through a real rough patch and lost a lot of weight on top of being really stressed. But I had the complete opposite problem- I bled for 3 months straight. Finally, I scheduled an appt and I found that it was nothing more than hormones, so the doctor gave me pills and I went back to normal. Just thinking it might be the same only kind of in reverse. You need to ask your doctor for a blood test though.

AngelofLove agony auntDoctors should be going through process of elimination so if they do not know what it is causing this, they should test for something else.

Cystic ovaries is the most common but not the only cause.

Stress is a very important factor.

I have has cysts in my overaries and the medication they have given me (3 different types) did not work.

What did it for me was a week of total rest (doing sod all),ate very heathly and drank a lot of water. After six months, my period returned.

Doctors can also subcribe you medication to make period appear within 48 hours. Either way, go back to GP and get checked out again as everyone is different.

Good luck

A male reader, fallenman United Kingdom +, writes (24 February 2007):

fallenman agony auntIt could just be that you are having irregular periods, the medical reasons are outside of my knowledge and experience.

I have heard of young women missing nine consecutive periods.

After a year or two things settle down into a regular rhythm, but even then every woman misses the occasional period.

But I seriously and strongly recommend you continue using contraceptive protection any way.

A reader, anonymous, writes (24 February 2007):

I believe pregnancy kits are about 99.9% effective.

You need to go back to the doctors.

There is no-one on this website that can possibly know if you are pregnant or not.

Speak to your GP again.
