writes:Hi. I'm 19 and I'm sitting here in tears because I have found a small lump on my right breast only a few minutes ago. I'm alone at the moment as my mum is asleep and I don't want to waken her with a false alarm of worry her so I don't know who to turn to! The lump doesn't hurt but it's a definite lump! I'm so worried as my father died of cancer, so did my uncle and my granny had breast cancer... it's my biggest fear! I don't know what to do... I might book a doctor's appointment tomorrow... hopefully it's nothing to worry about!!Thank you for listening! x Reply to this Question |

I found a lump at the side of my breast over a year ago i like you was fraught with worry i made an appointment for the doctor and they sent me to hospital to have it checked, i did and it turned out to be a sebeacous cyst! which seemingly is very common from the day i made the appointment i was seen within a week and i was so relieved it was nothing to worry about and your doing the right thing by checking your breasts your only 19 and i am thinking it will be something similar, talk to mum show her it and go see your doctor, i wish you well.

If you can move the skin over it (so, basically if you put two fingers on top of the lump and are able to move the skin without the lump moving with it) then it is NOT cancer. Then check if there is a corresponding lump on the other side (also, a lump in the same place on the other side means it's not cancer.)
Mine turned out to just be a cyst and ended up going down. Yours most likely is as well, as the majority (I believe 8 or 9 in 10) are not cancerous. RELAX! Go to your OBGYN or doctor just to put yourself at ease, but don't freak out. The odds are in your favour!

Even though they ask if you have had family members that have had breast cancer, a far greater number of women who have NO family members with breast cancer get breast cancer, so that's probably a moot point.
I lost my brother to brain cancer recently, and since he was diagnosed, I freak out every time I have a migraine now. That's pretty normal for most people. My husband likes to say that he has survived cancer many, many times! Because every funny mole is skin cancer, and every intestinal pain is colon cancer, so it's only in his mind when he is busy panicking about his own mortality. It's good to know other people do this as well. So, if two grown ups can be freaking out when they find a lump too, then your panic is normal, and you are definitely more mature that we are. LOL!
I also found a lump last January and it turned out to be nothing - just a blocked duct. Most lumps aren't breast cancer, most are just dense breast tissues, but what you said is absolutely right. It's important to check it out and rule OUT any remote possibility.
Going to the Doctor to get it checked out is the important thing ( and it's actually a good thing to have a base-line mammogram on file that they can refer to for you next scheduled mammogram). Monthly breast exams, best on the day your period finishes, are important too. Knowing which lumps are normal and have been there all along helps when you are examining your breasts, and you were pretty smart at picking out something that you had never noticed before.
My sister and I have both been checked this past year for lumps, and we were both told that it was nothing. I'm sure yours will be fine too. XXX

have you thought of being an agony aunt? you have answered your own question with the perfect answer.
its probably nothing. An ex of mine had a lump cut out when she was 20. it was lump thats all. Good to check them ( the boobs that is, not the lumps) - Go to docs tomorrow.
don't be afraid of cancer - you have a billion days to live first. eat well with lots of coloured food (veg and fruit) to help.

Calm down, calm down, calm down! Book yourself a doctor's appointment tomorrow - if you don't, you're going to stress out about it. Lumps can be all kinds of things, best to know what it is ASAP. Don't freak yourself out too much.
