I've been offered a job that would take me out of my comfort zone.

A female United Kingdom age 36-40, anonymous writes:

I have worked in the same small (30 people) company for 10 years. I enjoy my work and I like my colleagues. It can be stressful from time to time but I don’t have formal targets and I know I can do my job well. I am one of the most senior people in the company, but that means I have limited opportunities for career progression if I stay put. I also know that it is a secure job - we haven’t made any redundancies and don’t need to even in the current climate.

I have just been offered a job at a rival company. I would be doing the same type of work, but they are a big multinational and so I would have room to grow and work on some more interesting projects. They have offered to pay me fractionally more than I earn currently (not enough to really influence my decision) but with 5 days less holiday per year. I also know that they had to furlough some staff temporarily due to Covid, although it was not in the area of the business that I would be joining and those people are now all back at work. I have a couple of ex colleagues who work at this rival company who both say that they enjoy it. But I am also aware that they have targets that they have to meet - I’m not sure yet what my targets would be but I know that this would add extra pressure.

I’m not sure whether to take the job or not so any advice would be appreciated!

Honeypie agony auntSo if we look at the pro and cons:

PRO:

Bigger company

More experience

which can lead to promotion

added pressure/stress

CON:

They don't pay a whole lot more of all the extra work you will be doing.

There isn't the same stability

less vacation time

I would ALSO stick it out at your current place until this COVID settles. And I would NOT take on a new job if the pay raise isn't really worth it (regardless of experience). Why is that? Well you HAVE 10 years experience, that should count towards you being a VALUABLE employee. When you also add that they haven't been able to protect their employees in the "bigger" company but have in the smaller would count for me too.

If you DO want to spread your wings I'd wait a bit and DEFINITELY renegotiate that offer.

You can take the job to gain more experience, and leave after couple of years if things are not to your liking. To move up means coming out of your comfort zone.

My advice...I would stay where I am for now, until the country is back to full operation, from this covid thing. Too many uncertainty these days. It will give you time to think, and to see how that company functions in the next little while.

You could take some courses in the meantime to up your skills.

Also...Having less vacation and more stress doesn't exactly go good together.

Bottom line...If you have doubts...there maybe a good reason. So I would pay attention to those feelings.
