A female United Kingdom age 26-29, anonymous writes:

I dont know if this is the right place to ask this but I need some help. I'm 14, 5,5/5,6 and 12st. I quite heavy chested like my mum, so I know that's genetic, but slightly overweight. I have a feeling this is something to do with puberty because I've only put it on in the last year or so. I exercise and play sport, but do have to admit that I eat sometimes when I'm bored. I started my period in March.

Is this extra weight normal and will I lose it as I get taller?

I forgot one thing.

Even if you do not join WW do purchase a small blank notebook. Small enough to hold in the palm of your hand.

(1)Into this you write out your food intake daily. Every morsel. No one need see it but you, so please be truthful to you.

(2) on the other page you write up your daily exercise, and once again you be really truthful.

(3) you write up anything you did that made you proud of who you are.

Aim to keep a diary for every day dor the next 365 days.

So one Diary will not suffice.

Be as specific as possible.

Eg:

Half a banana with one dessertspoon of plain yoghurt and four strawberries.

If it is a Soup then write the recipe in the back of the Diary. And give the soup a number.

So in the diary it might say:

3 cups of soup #5

Same with the exercise:

Eg:

Zumba for 20 minutes

Lap swimming as breast stroke 30 minutes

walked 5572 steps today,

And thirdly, things you did well:

Eg:

Chose to drink a mineral water with ice and a squeeze of lemon instead of the milk shake my friends tried to get me to taste and wanted me to drink

I felt really good staying strong.

BettyBoup agony auntYou might lose it as you grow up, yes. But eating when you are bored will make you gain weight, especially if it's junk food. You don't need the extra calories. So, you could find a new habit for when you are bored, so you don't eat as much? Then the extra weight will definatly drop off in time, especially if you play lots of sports and exercise.

Also, don't worry too much, you're not massively overweight for your height. You may lose it in time, but if not, like I said, just find a way to stop from eating extra food when you're bored and you will lose the weight. You do not need to do anything more than that.

Good luck

You may be more genetically programmed to put on weight but that does not mean you can sit down and wash your hands of the problem.

You may get a little taller, but unlike boys you have female hormones like estrogen also affecting weight gain.

But even if you increase your height quite a few inches the 12 stone may still look heavy on a taller person.

First, a visit to the Doctor for your thyroid levels to be checked. And ask him to also check your estrogen levels. Thyroid mis-functioning is more common than you would think.

Next, start a regime of daily walking. Get a pedometer and wear it all the time. Aim to walk 10,000 steps. The faster you can walk the quicker you can get your steps tally up, daily.

Make sure that you only drink water. No carbonated drinks.

Now review your diet with the help of a Nutritionist. Ask the Doctor for a referal. You are still young so it is best that you get supporton this and start the right way and ignore fad diets.

If there is a public swimming pool nearby, and if you can get there early in the morning when the serious lap swimmers are there, then go into the slow lane and aim to start swimming ten laps of the pool every morning. Increase it to more laps until you can reach ten laps. Going very early helps you avoid the ignorant fools who dare to comment on bigger girls. Wear an old 2 shirt over your swimming costume if you feel self conscious, but know that you are the smart one. Since at least you ARE exercising.

Swimming is great exercise but puts less strain on your joints.

Limit how much sit down time you make use of at home. Perhaps get a Zumba dvd or a work-out dvd and do that from home. You can even make your own home use weights from an empty drink bottle filled with water for some and for heavier ones fill with dry sand and then add water.

The nutritionist will help you with interesting salads, ways to increase your fruit and vegetable intake. Alternatives to frying and alternatives to too much bread.

For snacks try some delicious vegetable based consome soups. Made at home from real vegetables and really healthy ingredients.

Limit your salt intake to very low (which is also why you avoid ready made/processed food/ takeaways/ bought pizza as most are far too high in salt.

Salt causes you to retain fluid in your body and can make you look bigger than you really are.

Now is the time to nip this in the bud. If you need extra weekly support then ask your Mom if she will please support you by joining WeightWatchersInternational.com with you. You can even join it online if there are no local classes that are easy for you to attend. Maybe Mom could purchase a package for you to follow on libe as a pre-birthday or pre-Christmas early present.

Do not purchase all the marketed 'Diet Foods' NOT even the super well known brands ones. Fresh Real food and learning how to prepare and cook nutritous Great Tasting Healthy Fresh Food is far better for you.

If all those prepared Diet foods really worked then the billions of units of that 'Diet'??? food already sold would have wiped out obesity by now, but has not. The said food is over-priced, and often short on vegetables.

If you continue what you have been doing since March, and make none of the changes above to your lifestyle, then you will weigh more next year and more again the following year.

Now is the time to take some action and you have made the first Good Step in the right direction by writing your question here on DearCupid.

The situation clearly concerns you and you clearly want to address the issue and do something about it.

Well done for recogizing the need to address this growing problem.

Losing weight is about your Attitude, your Lifestyle, regular Exercise, and changes to you food and fluid intake. But most of all it is about your future Good Health and your Healthy Future.

Best wishes

Abella
