hey i would post this problem on dearcupid's sister site careerglove.com, but it looks like the last activity it had was in 2007.

anyway heres my dilemma. even though i'm only 16, i've made up my mind in joining the military, i've started filling out paperwork and forms and the like. before i continue, i like to think things ahead, the further i can plan, the better i feel, the more confident i feel.

i love military life. absolutely love it. i'm in the cadets and i go away on courses as much as possible just so that i get to live another week in the military.

but all of this needs to get paid for, as will my a levels (or the transport to get me to the college) Is there any way I could combine my militant attitude to a part time job? The only job i can think of that people seem to be struggling for round where i live is a bouncer, but i know that 1 the license and training is expensive, and 2 i don't know if i'm old enough.

any help will be much appreciated. and sorry for the length of the question

halu agony auntawesome thankyou for the great advice.

i wasn't aware that militant attitude was used in such a violent context. i hope you understand that this wasn't my intention. i merely meant that i love the discipline, the routine of the military. not the fact that i use violence to solve all of my problems. i hate using violence, even as a last resort, it's almost as bad as losing a battle to me. i'd like to say i'm a very diplomatic person, as i said i dislike using violence, but i'm not daft and i know when it is necessary.

i'm about 13 stone, and i'm about 5ft 9, but i am still growing, my mum is about 5' 11" and my dad is 6' 2", so in theory i should be around the middle of that mark. but as i have to be 18 to become a bouncer anyway, it makes all this slightly superfluous, as i'm joining the navy at 18 anyway. more than likely as an officer.

but once again thankyou for the brilliant advice and information. this has definately solved my dilema :) time to look in the job section i think haha

k_c100 agony auntOk well as for being a bouncer:

1. You cannot work in a licensed establishment (i.e. sells alcohol) until you are 18

2. Height and weight - one of the main reason for having bouncers is that they are tall and heavy = big and scary. This is off-putting to trouble-makers and lessens the chance of fights breaking out if they know the bouncers are massive and will chuck them out immediately. So how tall are you? How much do you weigh? I am not certain on this but I doubt any club or bar would hire you even aged 18 if you are under 5"10 and weigh less than 12 stone.

3. You are female. This will go against you and it will be very hard for you to get a job as a bouncer. Yes there are female bouncers but they are rare, so automatically you will be up against it.

I dont know what you seem to think a "militant attitude" is, and if I were you I would stop using this phrase as it essentially means to be open to using violence to achieve an end and in todays society is used a lot in political terms, including terrorism and for any person who believes that using violence is the best way to acheive a larger objective. So please dont ever use this phrase again, I am sure you are not a violent person and are only thinking of joining the military for aggressive, violent purposes. Plus if you are ever thinking about being a bouncer as a part time job, the job is all about talking rather than fighting. So if you were ever in an interview and talked about your "militant attitude" then you would NEVER get the job as they are not looking for agressive fighters, they want people who are diplomatic, can talk people out of difficult situations, are good at keeping the peace and who can deal with a violent situation in a calm and strong manner.

One thing I have thought of for you - have you ever thought of going to an army/defence based 6th form? Like this link here http://www.welbeck.mod.uk/

They are great for your studies as the standards of teaching are excellent, and there is funding available for you to study there, plus the fees all depend on how much your parents earn. So this is worth thinking about - it will give you great grades at A level plus almost guarantee you a great position in the military once you have finished. There are other colleges other than welbeck in the UK so it is worth doing your research and talking to your parents.

As for part time jobs - you just need to get whatever you can that pays you reasonably well. You are too young to do anything that would combine the military with working, so for now all you can do is keep on with the cadets for fun, work towards your military career and make some money on the side through a normal job like most teenagers. Supermarkets, shops, restaurants etc are all the usual places that hire teenagers, so stick with these for now. Yes it will be a bit boring and it is not military based, but at least it will bring in some money and you will know it is helping you to acheive your goals.

I hope this helps and good luck!
