I go to boarding school, and I go back soon. But I know that I'm going to feel really homesick, I really miss not being at home and not being with my family...is there anyway I can stop feeling so homesick when I'm at school. I'm fine after a couple of days but the first week or so is hard. Do you have any idea how I can stop feeling so homesick?

natasia agony auntYes, my poor son was sobbing last night, not wanting to go back. I must admit that generally I wasn't unhappy to go back, because it was so boring at home!

Good luck, though - just remember, it's nowhere near as bad as it was in the days before mobile phones and email!! At least you're allowed to contact home I guess! When I was at school, it was letters only. Rather like being away in the war, I used to feel : )

Thank you both for all your help, I guess its nose to the grindstone - I've been boarding for nearly 5 years now but it doesn't get any easier after a long period of time at home! Thank you again

natasia agony auntI also know how you feel, because I too went to boarding school, and my son (12) also goes now. It's really hard. The best thing is to hang out with your friends all the time, and do something that makes you laugh and take your mind off it. I know the worst bit is just looking around that school environment, though, and lying in an uncomfortable bed and knowing your family is far away ... it's really bad. I get upset about my son being away, but it was his choice, and he really enjoys it ,but I know he gets homesick, too. Although when I call he's always busy doing something else!

The only way is maybe to write your parents a letter when you feel bad, or call them even, if you're allowed. And distract yourself. And think it won't be long till you see them again. And maybe have your pillow or something from home. Jeez. I don't know. Sorry.

Ask oldersister agony auntI know how you feel because I went to boarding school in another state far away from my friends and family. The first six months was the hardest and I found writing letters helped a lot. I made the best friends at boarding school and this is what kept me from being homesick the last couple of years I was there- in fact, I didn't want to go home! Get involved in some of the activities the school has to offer like theatre, painting, sports or even the dining room. I worked there a lot in my first year as a distraction and to keep busy so I didn't miss my old friends so much. It's a wonderful opportunity and experience overall! You will be glad you went.
